How to Win at Solitaire | Strategy & Tips

By PlayBrain Teamยทยท7 min read
Klondike Solitaire is one of the most-played card games in history, but the average win rate sits around 25-30%. That means most people lose more often than they win. The good news: a few strategic adjustments can push your win rate significantly higher. These tips apply to standard Klondike Solitaire (the version most people mean when they say "Solitaire"). 1. Always Move Aces and Deuces to the Foundation Immediately

When you spot an Ace, move it to the foundation pile right away. Same goes for 2s (deuces) if the matching Ace is already up there. These low cards serve no useful purpose on the tableau since nothing builds on top of an Ace, and only an Ace builds under a 2.

Holding onto them just blocks the column. Get them out of the way as fast as possible.

2. Expose Face-Down Cards First

Your top priority should always be flipping face-down cards. Columns with the most hidden cards should get your attention first. Every face-down card is a mystery that could contain a card you desperately need.

When choosing between two valid moves, pick the one that reveals a hidden card over one that does not. More information means better decisions.

3. Do Not Empty a Column Without a King Ready

An empty column can only be filled with a King. If you clear a column and have no King available to place there, you have wasted a valuable tableau spot and reduced your options.

Before clearing a column, check: do you have a King you can move in? If not, keep the column occupied until a King becomes available.

4. Choose King Placement Carefully

When you do get to place a King in an empty column, think about which King to choose. Look at the colors of the cards you need to build on that King.

A red King (Hearts or Diamonds) needs a black Queen next, then a red Jack, and so on. Check which Queens, Jacks, and 10s are available or likely to appear, and choose the King color that gives you the most building options.

5. Build Evenly Across Foundation Piles

It is tempting to stack one foundation pile high while ignoring the others. Resist this urge. If your Spades foundation has 7 cards but your Hearts foundation only has 2, you have locked away cards that might be needed for tableau building.

Try to keep all four foundation piles within 2-3 cards of each other. This keeps more cards available for tableau moves.

6. Use the Stock Pile Strategically

In draw-three Solitaire, you only see every third card in the stock pile. Before drawing, look at your tableau and think about what cards you need. Sometimes it is better to make a different move first so that the stock pile card you want becomes accessible on the next pass.

Track which cards you have seen in the stock pile. Knowing what is coming helps you plan several moves ahead.

7. Do Not Move Cards to the Foundation Too Quickly

This sounds like it contradicts tip #1, but there is an important distinction. Aces and 2s should always go up immediately. But 3s, 4s, 5s, and higher cards sometimes serve a purpose on the tableau.

A black 5 on the tableau might be needed to hold a red 4, which holds a black 3, which eventually lets you move and reveal a hidden card. Moving that 5 to the foundation too early eliminates this chain of possibilities.

The rule of thumb: move a card to the foundation if both cards of the opposite color and one rank lower are already in the foundation. For example, move a red 6 up only if both black 5s are already on foundations.

8. Alternate Colors When Building Tableau Columns

This one is obvious since the rules require it, but think about which specific color arrangement gives you the most flexibility. If you have a choice between placing the Jack of Hearts or the Jack of Diamonds on a black Queen, consider which one frees up more useful cards or creates better building sequences.

9. Play Through the Stock Pile Before Making Big Moves

When you start a new game, go through the entire stock pile once before committing to major tableau rearrangements. This gives you a full picture of what cards are available and helps you plan a real strategy instead of just reacting to each card as it appears.

10. Know When a Game Is Unwinnable

Not every Klondike Solitaire deal is winnable. Roughly 79% of deals have at least one solution, but finding it requires optimal play. If you have gone through the stock pile multiple times with no new moves possible, it is usually time to deal a new game rather than cycling endlessly.

Signs a game is stuck:

  • All face-down cards are trapped behind cards you cannot move
  • The stock pile has been cycled twice with no moves made
  • Multiple columns are blocked by out-of-sequence cards

Quick Reference Cheat Sheet

| Situation | Best Move | |-----------|-----------| | Ace or 2 visible | Move to foundation immediately | | Two valid moves | Choose the one that reveals a face-down card | | Empty column, no King | Keep the column occupied | | Multiple Kings available | Pick the color that matches your available Queens | | Stock pile first pass | Scan the whole pile before making big moves |

Practice Makes Perfect

The best way to improve at Solitaire is to play with these strategies in mind. Over time, they become second nature and your win rate will climb steadily.

Frequently Asked Questions about How to Win at Solitaire | Strategy & Tips

What is the best strategy for winning at Klondike Solitaire?
The key strategies are: always move Aces and 2s to foundations immediately, uncover face-down cards before building tableau stacks, prefer moving cards that expose face-down cards over filling empty columns, and don't empty a column unless you have a King ready to place there. Only about 79-82% of Klondike deals are mathematically winnable.
Can you always win at Solitaire?
No โ€” not every Solitaire deal is winnable. In Klondike (the classic version), roughly 79-82% of deals are theoretically solvable, but even winnable deals require optimal play. If you've gone through the stock three times without progress, the game is likely stuck. Use the undo feature to backtrack and try different move sequences.
What are the most important tips for Solitaire beginners?
Three tips make the biggest difference: (1) Never move a card to the foundation if it blocks another useful move โ€” foundations can wait. (2) Always prefer tableau moves that uncover face-down cards. (3) Only empty a column when you have a King (and ideally a full sequence) to immediately fill it with. Empty columns are powerful but only if you use them right.
