Spider Solitaire is the most strategically demanding solitaire variant. While Klondike gives you one deck and clear rules, Spider asks you to manage two decks, multiple suits, and sequences that only count when every card matches. You can play Spider Solitaire right here for free with no download, no account, and three difficulty settings from beginner to brutal.
How to Play Spider Solitaire
The goal is to build 8 complete sequences from King down to Ace, all in the same suit. Completed sequences are automatically removed from the board. Clear all 8 sequences to win.
The basics:
- You get 10 columns of cards, some face-up and some face-down
- You can move any face-up card (or sequence of face-up cards) to any column with the next-higher card on top
- You can stack mixed suits, but only a complete same-suit sequence (K through A) counts and gets removed
- When you run out of moves, deal a new row from the stock pile (requires at least one card in every column)
What makes it hard: Mixed-suit sequences block you. You can move a red 7 onto a black 8, but that sequence is now "locked" and won't clear until you sort the suits out. Every shortcut creates more sorting work later.
The 3 Difficulty Modes
| Mode | Suits | Win Rate | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1-Suit | Spades only | ~90% | Learning the game |
| 2-Suit | Spades + Hearts | ~45% | Intermediate players |
| 4-Suit | All suits | ~15% | Expert challenge |
1-Suit mode removes all suit conflict. Every sequence is automatically valid and every completed King-to-Ace run clears immediately. Use this to learn the flow of the game without the sorting headache.
2-Suit mode is where Spider gets interesting. You're sorting black and red now, which means most of your sequences are mixed and need reorganizing before they'll clear. Expect games to take 15-25 minutes.
4-Suit mode is genuinely brutal. Win rates hover around 15% even for experienced players. Most games are decided by how the initial deal falls.
Spider Solitaire Strategy: 5 Tips That Actually Work
1. Empty a column as fast as possible
An empty column is the most powerful resource in Spider. You can use it as temporary storage to reorganize suits, break up problematic sequences, or set up a long move chain. Early in the game, sacrifice other progress to get one column empty.
2. Keep suits together from the start
Mixed-suit sequences cost you time and moves to untangle later. When you have a choice between placing a card on a same-suit column vs. a mixed-suit column, always prefer same-suit even if it means a less "efficient" move on the surface.
3. Delay dealing from the stock pile
Every stock deal covers all 10 columns, which buries your progress and can create new tangles. The longer you delay dealing, the more time you have to sort what's already out. Only deal when you're genuinely stuck.
4. Think in sequences, not individual cards
Moving a single card to "park" it rarely helps. Think about which 3-5 card sequences you're building and work toward completing them. Random individual card moves create chaos.
5. Expose face-down cards early
Face-down cards are unknown information. Flipping them reveals your options. Early in the game, prioritize moves that reveal face-down cards over moves that just rearrange face-up ones.
Spider vs. Other Solitaire Variants
| Game | Decks | Difficulty | Time Per Game |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spider Solitaire | 2 | Hard | 10-30 min |
| Klondike Solitaire | 1 | Medium | 5-15 min |
| FreeCell | 1 | Medium | 10-20 min |
| Pyramid Solitaire | 1 | Easy-Medium | 5-10 min |
Spider is the longest and most complex of the major solitaire variants. If you want a quick game, Klondike. If you want a pure logic puzzle, FreeCell. If you want the full strategic challenge, Spider.
Scoring
You start with 500 points. Each move costs 1 point. Completing a full King-to-Ace suit sequence rewards 100 points. A perfect no-waste game on 1-suit can score 1300+ (500 base + 8 x 100 suit bonuses). On 4-suit, expert players aim to keep losses below 200 points.
