Frequently Asked Questions about Lantern Deep

What is Lantern Deep?
Lantern Deep is a free text adventure you play in the browser. You wake in a flooded mine with a lantern. Explore room by room, pick up keys and tools, open locked doors and boxes, find relics, and climb back to your camp before the lantern oil runs out. No download, no account.
Do I have to type?
No. Every highlighted word in the text can be tapped, and the buttons at the bottom move you and offer Look, Take and Use. Typing is there if you want it: open the keyboard button and type commands like go north, take key or use crank on lift. It autocompletes, and if it cannot match what you typed it suggests the three closest commands.
What does the lantern oil do?
Oil is your turn budget. Moving, taking and using things burn one oil each; looking and examining are free. Climbing out takes a little more the deeper you are. If the oil runs out you lose the relics you were carrying, but you keep what you learned about the puzzles.
What are relics and the camp?
Relics are treasures hidden behind the puzzles. Bring them up and they are banked. Score is relics times the deepest depth you reached. Spend banked relics at camp on a rope line (climb deeper shafts), a bigger lantern (more oil), a map room (see every room) and a smithy (craft lamp oil and gems).
Can I get stuck?
No. Every mine is built so it can always be finished: keys are never behind their own lock, nothing you do closes a way, and undo is unlimited. The hint button gives a nudge, then a pointer, then the exact command.
What is the Daily Descent?
Every day there is one Daily Descent: the same mine for every player, with a rope and a map but a plain lantern. Bring relics up to set your score, build a streak and share your result.
Is it safe for school?
Yes. Lantern Deep has peril but no gore and nothing scary: the worst that happens is your lantern goes out and you feel your way home. It is good reading practice, with short paragraphs, clear words and no time pressure. It saves in your browser with no login.
How long is a game?
A descent takes about 8 to 15 minutes. Most players clear the first depth, push one deeper, and climb out with a few relics. Your camp grows between descents.

About Lantern Deep

Lantern Deep is a free text adventure: the kind of game where words are the whole world. You wake in an old flooded mine with a lantern in your hand. Each room is described in a few lines, and you explore by going north, south, east and west, examining what you find, taking what is useful and using it on what is locked. A rusted door wants grease, an iron grate wants its key, a hungry cave toad wants a jar of beetles.

You never have to type. Every highlighted word is a button, and the bar at the bottom moves you and offers Look, Take and Use. If you like typing, open the keyboard and type commands the classic way; it autocompletes, and when it cannot match what you typed it offers the three nearest commands instead of an error. A map draws itself as you go, the hint button gives a nudge, then a pointer, then the exact command, and undo is unlimited.

Your lantern oil is the clock. Every descent builds a new mine from over 40 hand-written rooms and 19 kinds of puzzle, three to five locks a depth, all checked by a solver so no mine can trap you. Bring relics up to bank them, then grow your camp with a rope line, a bigger lantern, a map room and a smithy. Play the Daily Descent to compare scores. It is written for all ages, with no gore and nothing to buy, so it works well as a reading game in class.
