How Wordle Works

Guess a 5-letter word in 6 attempts. After each guess, the tiles reveal clues:

• Green = correct letter, correct position
• Yellow = correct letter, wrong position

1. CRANE — C, R, A, N, E (hits 5 of the top 10 letters)
2. SLATE — S, L, A, T, E (very common letters, no duplicates)
3. AUDIO — A, U, D, I, O (tests 4 of the 5 vowels at once)
4. RAISE — R, A, I, S, E (5 high-frequency letters)
5. TRACE — T, R, A, C, E (similar to CRANE with T first)

Avoid starting with words that have repeated letters (like SLEEP or SPEED). You want maximum information from your first guess.

The CRANE + SOUTH combination: After CRANE, if you have limited info, SOUTH tests S, O, U, T, H — covering the remaining vowels and several common consonants. These two guesses together test 10 different letters before your third guess.

Wordle Strategy: How to Improve Your Score

Use yellow letters in different positions

A yellow letter is in the word but not where you placed it. Your next guess must move that letter to a different position. Many players forget this and waste guesses by repeating the same position.

Eliminate multiple letters per guess

Even if you already know some green letters, use your remaining guesses to test new letters rather than just varying the unknowns around your confirmed letters. More information per guess = fewer guesses to the answer.

Think about word patterns

English words have patterns. After getting 2-3 confirmed letters, think about common suffixes (-ING, -ED, -LY, -ER, -EST) and prefixes (UN-, RE-, OUT-). These patterns narrow down the remaining possibilities fast.

Play in hard mode to build skill

Hard mode (toggle in settings) requires you to use all confirmed letters in every subsequent guess. It forces better discipline and builds the logical deduction skills that improve your average score over time.
