Nerdle is a daily math puzzle game built on the same core mechanic as Wordle โ but instead of guessing a word, you guess an equation. You get 6 attempts to find an 8-character math equation that evaluates correctly. Each guess gives you color-coded clues about which numbers and operators are in the right position.

How Nerdle Works
The answer is always a valid math equation with exactly 8 characters, using digits (0โ9), operators (+, -, *, /), and an equals sign (=). Your job: figure out which equation it is in 6 guesses or fewer.
After each guess, tiles change color:
| Color | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Green | Correct character, correct position |
| Purple | Correct character, wrong position |
| Black | This character doesn't appear in the answer |
The logic is identical to Wordle โ just applied to math equations instead of letters. A guess like 10+20=30 is valid if it's a correct equation. If "3" lights up green in position 7, you know the 7th character is "3".
Nerdle Rules You Need to Know
- Every guess must be a valid equation.
1+2=4is invalid (1+2โ 4). The game won't accept it. - The equals sign is always at position 6, 7, or 8. Structure accordingly.
- Order of operations applies.
2+3*4=14is valid (multiplication first: 3*4=12, plus 2=14). - No leading zeros.
02+3=5is not allowed. Numbers don't pad with zeros. - Commutative answers aren't both valid. If the answer is
10+20=30, the game won't also accept20+10=30unless commutative mode is enabled.
Starting Strategy: The Best Opening Guess
A strong opening Nerdle guess contains common digits and operators while covering as much information as possible. Think about frequency:
- Common digits: 1, 2, 3, 4 appear more often in valid 8-character equations than larger numbers
- Common operators: + and - are more frequent than * and /
- Include the = sign: Every valid equation has one, so its position is free information
A high-information first guess is something like 12+34=46 or 10*3+2=32 โ these cover 4+ unique digits and at least one operator. You're not trying to get lucky on the first guess; you're narrowing down the character set efficiently.
Reading the Clues
After each guess, use the colors methodically:
Green tiles
Lock that character in that position for all future guesses. If position 3 is green with "+", every future guess must have "+" at position 3.
Purple tiles
The character exists somewhere in the equation, but not in this position. Rearrange it in your next guess โ don't leave it in the same spot.
Black tiles
Eliminate that character entirely. If "7" is black, the answer contains no 7s. This is equally valuable to green โ you're shrinking the possibility space.
How to Solve Nerdle in 3 Guesses
The fastest solves follow this pattern:
- Guess 1: Maximum information โ hit as many unique digits and operators as possible. Accept that you won't solve it yet.
- Guess 2: Use all clues from guess 1. Fix green positions. Move purple characters to new positions. Avoid all black characters.
- Guess 3: By now you have enough constraints to construct the specific equation. Focus on valid equations that satisfy all known constraints.
The key skill in Nerdle that differs from Wordle: you must always guess valid equations. This means your clue-narrowing moves are constrained by math โ you can't just place characters freely. Learn to think in equation structures, not just character positions.
Nerdle Variants
The standard Nerdle is an 8-character equation. There are also mini-mode and maxi-mode variants in some versions:
- Mini Nerdle: 6-character equations โ faster and easier (e.g.
4+5=9) - Classic Nerdle: Standard 8 characters (e.g.
12+34=46) - Speed Nerdle: Race against the clock instead of guesses
The daily puzzle at PlayBrain uses classic 8-character equations, one per day, with a fresh puzzle at midnight.
Common Nerdle Mistakes
- Guessing invalid equations. Always double-check your math before submitting. Invalid guesses waste a turn.
- Ignoring order of operations.
2+3*4equals 14, not 20. Mental math errors lead to invalid guesses. - Repeating eliminated characters. Black means gone. Don't include black characters in later guesses โ it wastes information.
- Not exploring the operator space. If your guesses have only used +, try - or * to learn whether the answer equation uses those operators.
- Too narrow on the right side. The number after = can be large (like 99). Don't assume single-digit results.
