At What Age Do Footballers Peak? | Data by Position

The short answer: most outfield footballers peak somewhere between 25 and 27, and goalkeepers peak later. The longer answer depends on how you measure a peak, which position you look at, and what level the player reaches. This article pulls together what published research actually says, with links to every source.

The headline number: 25 to 27

The most cited study on the question is Seife Dendir's When do soccer players peak? A note, published in the Journal of Sports Analytics in 2016. Dendir used player performance ratings from WhoScored.com for the 2010/11 to 2014/15 seasons in four major European leagues, including the English Premier League, and modelled how those ratings changed with age.

The study concluded that the average player peaks between 25 and 27 depending on position. In the preferred models, the typical forward peaks at 25 and the typical defender at 27, with midfielders landing inside that 25 to 27 band. Goalkeepers were not included. It also found that defenders show relatively little curvature in their age curve, meaning their performance rises and falls more gently than an attacker's.

A second method gives a slightly older peak

Performance ratings are only one way to define a peak. A 2021 study by Oterhals, Lorås and Pedersen in Frontiers in Psychology, Age at Nomination Among Soccer Players Nominated for Major International Individual Awards, took a different approach. It looked at the age of 1,981 players at the moment they were nominated for major individual awards such as the Ballon d'Or, on the logic that a nomination marks a player at or near their best.

The mean age at nomination was 26.75 years. By position:

PositionMean age at nomination
Goalkeepers29.64
Defenders27.82
Midfielders26.46
Forwards25.99

The authors concluded that peak age in football is higher than earlier studies suggested and closer to other team ball sports. The order is the same as Dendir's, though: attackers peak first, defenders later and goalkeepers last.

Why position changes the peak

The pattern across both studies makes sense once you look at what each position asks for.

Attackers and wide players lean on speed and repeated sprints, which are the first things age takes. A long-running study of LaLiga players, No sport for old players00046-9/fulltext) by Rey, Lorenzo-Martínez, López-Del Campo, Resta and Lago-Peñas (Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport, 2022), followed 154 players across the 2012/13 to 2019/20 seasons. Total distance covered fell by an average of 0.56% for every year a player got older, and measures of high-intensity running fell faster, by roughly 1.4% to 1.8% a year.

Experience partly makes up for it. The same study found that pass accuracy improved by about 0.25% a year as players aged. Players lose some legs but gain decision-making, which is one reason central defenders and deep midfielders often stay at the top level longer than wingers.

Goalkeepers depend least on running. Positioning, reading the game and organisation matter more, and those improve with experience. That fits the oldest peak age in the award data and the oldest squad profile in the club data below.

How old are the players at the top level?

Squad ages tell a similar story. A study of 16,062 players across 26 seasons of the UEFA Champions League by Kalén, Rey, de Rellán-Guerra and Lago-Peñas, Are Soccer Players Older Now Than Before? (Frontiers in Psychology, 2019), found the average player age rose from 24.9 to 26.5 years between 1992/93 and 2017/18. More than 80% of players were between 21 and 29.

Mean age by position in that data:

PositionMean age (Champions League, 1992 to 2018)
Goalkeepers28.19
Centre backs26.31
Central midfielders25.44
Forwards25.32
Wingers24.70

These are average ages, not estimated peaks, but the ranking is the same: goalkeepers oldest, wingers youngest. The same study found market value was highest for players aged 26 to 30. Across many more leagues, the CIES Football Observatory's Monthly Report 79 (November 2022) described the typical professional footballer as a man aged 26.

How long is a football career?

Peak age is one question. How long the whole career lasts is another, and the answer depends heavily on level.

The most detailed recent figures come from Jones and colleagues, Establishing 'normal' career longevity in professional footballers, published in Knee Surgery, Sports Traumatology, Arthroscopy in 2025. They tracked 4,117 male players with at least three appearances in the top four English divisions between 1992 and 2023.

  • Average career length in those leagues was 11.6 years for outfield players and 12.4 years for goalkeepers.
  • Outfield players made their debut at an average of 20.0 and their final appearance at 30.5.
  • Goalkeepers debuted later, at 21.9 on average, and made their final appearance at 33.3.

Level made a huge difference:

Highest level reached (outfield)Average career length
Premier League and international14.8 years
Premier League13.7 years
Championship11.3 years
League One8.9 years
League Two6.2 years

Outfield players who reached the Premier League and played international football made their last appearance in those leagues at an average age of 33.4. For players whose highest level was League Two, it was 25.6.

One caveat: the study counts appearances in the top four English divisions only, so a player who moved abroad or into non-league football may have kept playing after their recorded final appearance. Some players were also still active when the data was collected.

When do footballers retire?

Putting those numbers together gives a realistic picture rather than a single age:

  • Elite outfield players commonly play into their early to mid thirties.
  • Goalkeepers play the longest, on average a few years beyond outfield players.
  • Players at lower levels often leave the professional leagues much younger. In the English data, those whose highest level was League Two made their last recorded appearance at 25.6 on average.

So the honest answer to "when do footballers retire?" is that it depends less on a fixed age and more on how good a player is and how long clubs keep wanting them. The better a player is at 27, the more years of decline they can afford before they drop out of the professional game.

What this means for a career

If you sketch a typical top-level career from this research, it looks like this: a debut around 20, steady improvement to a peak somewhere from 25 to 29 depending on position, a gradual physical decline that research can measure year on year, and a final season somewhere in the thirties for the best players. Attackers have the shortest window at their best; goalkeepers have the longest.

Try it yourself: play a whole career in minutes

If you want to feel how those curves play out, Football Career Simulator is a free, text-based soccer career game you can play in your browser with no download and no account. You start at 16 in a fictional club's academy and pick a position: Goalkeeper, Defender, Midfielder or Forward.

Many of the same patterns are built in. Young players grow fastest when they play regular minutes. Decline begins around 30, and pace and physical go first. A personal sports scientist can slow it down. You can retire from 32, and no one plays past 41. Along the way you choose a training focus, chase transfers and trophies with fictional clubs across nine nations, and finish with a legacy tier from Prospect to Greatest of All Time.

Frequently Asked Questions about At What Age Do Footballers Peak? | Data by Position

At what age do footballers peak?
Most research puts the peak for outfield players between about 25 and 27. A 2016 study in the Journal of Sports Analytics found forwards peak around 25 and defenders around 27. A 2021 study of major award nominees found an average age of 26.75, with forwards youngest and goalkeepers oldest.
At what age do goalkeepers peak?
Later than outfield players. In a 2021 study of players nominated for major individual awards, goalkeepers averaged 29.64 years at nomination, compared with 25.99 for forwards. Goalkeepers depend less on sprinting, which declines with age, and more on positioning and experience.
How long is the average football career?
A 2025 study of 4,117 players in the top four English divisions from 1992 to 2023 found an average career length of 11.6 years for outfield players and 12.4 years for goalkeepers. Players who reached the Premier League and international football averaged 14.8 years, while those whose highest level was League Two averaged 6.2 years.
When do footballers usually retire?
In the same 2025 study, outfield players made their final appearance in the top four English divisions at an average age of 30.5, and goalkeepers at 33.3. Elite players lasted longer: those who reached the Premier League and played internationally made their last appearance at 33.4 on average.
