How to Play Tentrix

Each turn you get three random block pieces to place on the 10x10 grid. You must place all three before getting new ones. When you fill a complete row or column, it clears and you earn points.

The game ends when none of your three pieces can fit on the remaining board.

The goal: Score as many points as possible before running out of space.

Scoring

• Each block placed: 1 point
• Clearing 1 line: 10 bonus points
• Clearing 2 lines simultaneously (combo): 30 bonus points
• Clearing 3 lines simultaneously: 60 bonus points
• Clearing 4+ lines simultaneously: 100+ bonus points

This means combo clears are where the real points are. A player who consistently clears 2-3 lines at once will score 3-5x more than someone clearing one line at a time.

Core Strategy: Keep the Center Open

The single most important principle in Tentrix is center control.

Beginners tend to fill corners and edges first because it feels tidy. This is a trap. Once corners fill up, you lose the flexibility to place irregular pieces. Long 1x4 pieces and L-shaped pieces need center space to fit.

The rule: Before placing any piece, ask whether it blocks the center or opens it. Pieces that open up lanes through the middle of the board are worth placing sub-optimally to keep the core clear.

Strategy: Think About Lines, Not Just Placement

Every time you place a piece, think about which lines it contributes to, not just whether it fits.

If you're placing a 3-block piece in the top-right corner, ask: does this complete or nearly complete a row? Does it set up a column clear? Or is it just filling dead space?

The best placements are ones that simultaneously advance 2-3 lines toward completion. A piece that adds blocks to a nearly-complete row AND a nearly-complete column is worth far more than the same piece placed elsewhere.

Strategy: Handle "Awkward" Pieces First

When you have three pieces to place, identify the hardest one first. Awkward pieces (large L-shapes, S/Z-shapes, 3x3 filled squares) are the most restrictive. Place those first while you have more board options.

Small pieces (1x1, 1x2, 1x3 lines) fit almost anywhere — save them as fillers for last.

If you place the easy pieces first, you may paint yourself into a corner where the awkward piece literally won't fit anywhere.

Strategy: Maintain Lane Corridors

Keep at least one clear 4-wide corridor running horizontally and vertically through the board at all times. This ensures you can always place 1x4 line pieces, which are crucial for efficient combo clears.

When a corridor starts to get blocked, prioritize clearing it over scoring moves. A board with open lanes is a board you can survive on indefinitely. A board with blocked lanes is one piece away from game over.

Combo Setups

The highest scores come from deliberately setting up multi-line combos.

The cross setup: Build two nearly-complete rows that cross at one empty column. Then build the nearly-complete column. One piece that fills the column completes 3 lines simultaneously.

The flush setup: Fill a 5x2 area with only 1-2 cells missing. Place pieces that complete that zone, clearing 2 rows and 2 columns at once.

These setups require holding back pieces that would score immediately in favor of building toward a larger payoff. It's the Tentrix equivalent of poker patience.
