If you've never played Gin Rummy before, here's what you need to know before sitting down.

---

How Gin Rummy Works

Each player is dealt 10 cards. The goal is to form melds โ€” groups of cards that fit together โ€” while keeping your unmatched cards (called deadwood) as low as possible.

There are two types of melds:

Meld TypeWhat It IsExample
Set3 or 4 cards of the same rankโ™ 7 โ™ฅ7 โ™ฆ7
Run3 or more consecutive cards of the same suitโ™ฃ4 โ™ฃ5 โ™ฃ6 โ™ฃ7

A card can only be in one meld at a time. Face cards (J, Q, K) are worth 10 points each. Aces are worth 1 point. All other cards are worth their pip value.

---

The Draw and Discard Cycle

On your turn:

  1. Draw one card โ€” either from the face-down deck or from the top of the discard pile
  2. Discard one card to the discard pile
  3. Repeat until you knock or go gin

You can see exactly what your opponent discards. That information is crucial โ€” more on that below.

---

Knocking vs Going Gin

This is the heart of the game. You have two ways to end a hand:

Knocking

Knock when your total deadwood is 10 points or less. You discard face-down, reveal your melds, and your opponent gets to lay off their unmatched cards onto your melds. Then both players count deadwood โ€” the difference goes to you.

But there's a risk: if your opponent's deadwood after lay-offs is equal to or lower than yours, they win the hand. This is called an undercut and they get a 25-point bonus on top of the difference.

Going Gin

If you can arrange all 10 cards into melds with zero deadwood, you go Gin. Discard face-down, declare gin. Your opponent cannot lay off cards. You score the full value of their deadwood plus a 25-point Gin bonus.

End ConditionScoring
Knock (win)Deadwood difference
Knock (undercut)Opponent gets deadwood difference + 25
GinYour opponent's full deadwood + 25

Going Gin is harder to achieve but much more rewarding.

Discard Strategy: What to Throw and When

The discard pile is public information โ€” both you and the AI can see every card thrown. Use it.

Watch what your opponent picks up. If the AI picks a 7 of hearts from the pile, it probably needs 7s or heart runs. Stop discarding cards near 7 or in hearts.

General discard priority:

  1. High-value unconnected cards first (K, Q, J that aren't near melds)
  2. Cards your opponent has already discarded (they don't need them)
  3. Middle cards last โ€” they connect to runs in both directions and are the most flexible

Never discard a card that completes your opponent's visible need. If the AI took an 8 of clubs, throwing the 7 or 9 of clubs is basically handing them the round.

---

When to Knock vs When to Wait for Gin

This is the decision that separates average players from good ones.

Knock early when:

  • Your deadwood is at 5 or below and your opponent has been drawing from the deck (not the discard pile)
  • You have 4+ melds locked in and only 1-2 deadwood cards left
  • The deck is running low (fewer draw opportunities means higher risk if you wait)

Wait for Gin when:

  • You already have 9 cards in melds and just need one more
  • The card you need is still in the deck (hasn't been discarded yet)
  • Your opponent keeps drawing from the deck, suggesting they're far from knocking

The key tension: waiting for Gin gives you a bigger score if you get there, but you risk your opponent knocking first and potentially undercutting you.

Reading the AI Opponent

The AI in Rummy plays a solid strategic game. It doesn't make random discards. Pay attention to:

  • What it draws from the discard pile: direct signal about its meld-building
  • What it doesn't take: if a card has been sitting in the discard pile for 3 turns, the AI probably can't use it
  • Knock timing: if the AI has been drawing from the deck consistently for 5+ turns without discarding anything useful-looking, it's probably close to knocking

---

Common Beginner Mistakes

Holding onto face cards too long. Kings and queens are worth 10 deadwood points each. If they haven't connected into a meld after 5 draws, dump them.

Ignoring the discard pile. The pile is free information. Players who don't use it are playing blind.

Waiting too long for Gin. If you can knock with 3 deadwood points, do it. Waiting to go gin means extra risk for limited extra reward.

Not counting opponent deadwood. Before knocking, think about what your opponent might lay off onto your melds. A solid knock of 8 deadwood can become an undercut if they have two matching cards.

Similar Card Games to Try

If you enjoy the mind-game of Gin Rummy, these are worth trying:

  • Spades โ€” trick-taking with bidding and partnerships
  • Cribbage โ€” peg-counting card game with a unique scoring board
  • Blackjack โ€” beat the dealer to 21 without going over
  • 8 Ball Pool โ€” different game, same "read your opponent" strategy depth

Frequently Asked Questions about Rummy Free Online | Gin Rummy Rules, Scoring & Winning

What are the rules of Gin Rummy?
Each player gets 10 cards. Take turns drawing from the stock or discard pile and discarding one card. Form melds: sets (3+ same rank) or runs (3+ consecutive same suit). Knock when your unmatched deadwood is 10 points or less, or go Gin when all cards are melded. Lowest deadwood wins the round.
When should you knock in Gin Rummy?
Knock when your deadwood drops to 10 or below and you cannot easily go Gin. Waiting too long risks the opponent going Gin first. A knock of 0-3 is very strong. A knock of 8-10 is risky since opponents can undercut you by laying off cards that reduce their deadwood below yours.
What is the best strategy for Gin Rummy?
Watch the discard pile closely since discards reveal what your opponent is building. Pass high-value cards (Kings, Queens) early if they are not forming melds. Keep two-way draws (cards that could complete either a set or a run). Avoid drawing from the discard pile unless the card directly completes a meld.
What is an undercut in Gin Rummy?
An undercut occurs when the non-knocking player has equal or lower deadwood than the knocker after laying off cards. The non-knocking player wins the round with a 25-point bonus added to the difference. It is why knocking with high deadwood (8-10) is risky.
Is Gin Rummy free to play online?
Yes. PlayBrain's Gin Rummy is free in your browser with no download or account. Play against a smart AI that uses proper gin strategy including watching discards and keeping card combinations flexible. Works on desktop and mobile.
