The Basic Rules of 8 Ball Pool
The table starts with 15 balls (plus the cue ball). The rules:
- One player shoots for solids (balls 1-7), the other for stripes (balls 9-15)
- Which group you play is decided by the first ball pocketed after the break
- Pocket all 7 of your group, then legally sink the 8-ball to win
- If you sink the 8-ball before clearing your group, you lose instantly
- If you scratch (sink the cue ball), your opponent gets ball-in-hand
Ball-in-hand means your opponent can place the cue ball anywhere on the table. This is a massive advantage, so avoiding scratches is just as important as making pockets.
How to Aim and Control Power
Click and drag on the cue ball to set your shot direction. A guideline shows where the cue ball will travel. Extend the guideline mentally to see where your target ball will go after contact.
Power is controlled by how far back you pull the cue. A full power shot isn't always best โ many position-based shots need moderate power to leave the cue ball where you want it for the next shot.
Cut shots: When you don't have a straight shot, aim for the edge of the target ball. The ball will roll at roughly the same angle away from the contact point. Practice estimating the angle โ most misses come from hitting too full or too thin on cut shots.
Break Strategy
The break is one of the highest-leverage moments in the game. Tips for a strong break:
- Aim at the center of the front ball of the rack (the 1-ball in 8-ball setups)
- Use near-full power โ a stronger break scatters balls further and creates more pocketing opportunities
- Try to keep the cue ball near the center of the table after the break, giving you angles to run out
If you pocket a ball on the break, you get to continue shooting and choose your group. If you scratch on the break, your opponent gets ball-in-hand anywhere on the table.
Shot Types Every Player Should Know
| Shot Type | When to Use |
|---|---|
| Straight shot | Cue ball, target ball, and pocket all in a line |
| Cut shot | Target ball is off-center โ aim to clip it at an angle |
| Bank shot | Bounce the target ball off a rail into a pocket |
| Safety shot | No good pocket available โ deliberately leave the opponent with no shot |
| Combination | Use one ball to pocket another (advanced) |
When to Play Safe
Beginners try to pot every shot. Good players know when to play a safety โ a defensive shot that leaves your opponent with no makeable ball. Play safe when:
- All your balls are clustered or blocked by the opponent's balls
- The only available shot is low-probability and a miss would give your opponent a wide-open table
- The 8-ball is near a pocket but your group isn't cleared yet
A well-played safety puts the cue ball behind one of your own balls, forcing your opponent to bank or play their own safety.
Pocketing the 8-Ball to Win
Once you've cleared your group, you must call your pocket before shooting the 8-ball. The 8-ball must go in the called pocket โ a fluke pocket in the wrong hole doesn't count in regulation rules. Play a high-percentage shot with the cue ball positioned to avoid scratching. A scratch on the 8-ball is an instant loss, so accuracy matters more than power here.
