Blackjack is the only casino game where your decisions actually change your odds. Play perfectly using basic strategy and the house edge drops to under 0.5%. Play on gut feel and you're giving away 2โ€“4%. This guide shows you exactly what to do in every situation.

The Object of Blackjack

Beat the dealer by getting a hand total closer to 21 than theirs โ€” without going over ("busting"). Number cards are face value, face cards (J, Q, K) are 10, and Aces are 1 or 11 (whichever helps more).

Blackjack (an Ace + any 10-value card) beats a dealer's 21 and pays 3:2.

Your Four Decisions

Hit

Take another card. Use when your total is low and the dealer is likely to have a strong hand.

Stand

Take no more cards. Use when busting is likely or when the dealer is likely to bust.

Double Down

Double your bet and take exactly one more card. Best used when you have 10 or 11 and the dealer is showing a weak card.

Split

When you have a pair, split them into two separate hands, each with a new bet. Some pairs are always good to split; others never.

Basic Strategy: The Complete Rules

Basic strategy is the mathematically optimal play for every hand combination. Memorise these rules and you play near-perfectly.

Hard Hands (no Ace, or Ace counting as 1)

Your TotalDealer ShowsAction
8 or lessAnyHit
93โ€“6Double Down
92, 7โ€“AceHit
102โ€“9Double Down
1010, AceHit
112โ€“10Double Down
11AceHit
124โ€“6Stand
122, 3, 7โ€“AceHit
13โ€“162โ€“6Stand
13โ€“167โ€“AceHit
17โ€“21AnyStand

The key insight: When the dealer shows 4, 5, or 6, they have to hit and are statistically likely to bust. So stand on anything 12 or higher and let the dealer destroy themselves.

Soft Hands (Ace counting as 11)

A soft hand can't bust on one hit because the Ace drops from 11 to 1 if you'd go over 21.

Pairs (Split or Not?)

PairAction
AcesAlways split
8sAlways split
10sNever split (20 is a great hand)
5sNever split (treat as 10, double instead)
4sNever split

6sSplit vs dealer 2โ€“6; hit otherwise
7sSplit vs dealer 2โ€“7; hit otherwise
9sSplit vs dealer 2โ€“6, 8โ€“9; stand vs 7, 10, Ace

Always split Aces and 8s โ€” this is the most important pair rule. Two Aces split gives each hand a chance at 21. Two 8s (total: 16) is the worst hand in blackjack โ€” splitting gives you two fresh starts.

Never split 10s โ€” standing on 20 wins almost 70% of the time. Don't wreck a great hand.

The Dealer's Hidden Card

A crucial fact that shapes all strategy: the dealer must hit until reaching 17 or higher. When the dealer shows a weak upcard (4, 5, 6), there's a solid chance they'll bust trying to reach 17. This is why basic strategy tells you to stand on 12โ€“16 when the dealer is showing those weak cards โ€” let them bust.

When the dealer shows 7โ€“Ace, assume the hole card is a 10 (there are more 10-value cards in the deck than any other). That means the dealer likely has 17โ€“21 already, and you need to hit aggressively.

House Edge & Why It Matters

With perfect basic strategy, the house edge in standard blackjack is 0.4โ€“0.5%. That means on average you lose less than 50 cents per $100 wagered. Without strategy, average players give up 2โ€“3%.

Avoid these moves that dramatically increase the house edge:

  • Taking insurance โ€” it's almost always a bad bet (house edge 6โ€“7% on insurance alone)
  • Standing on soft 18 vs dealer's 9 or 10 โ€” basic strategy says hit
  • Not doubling 11 vs dealer's 6 โ€” you're leaving money on the table
  • Splitting 10s โ€” never, ever split a 20

How to Read the Dealer's Upcard Fast

The fastest mental shortcut: categorize the dealer's upcard as weak (4, 5, 6), neutral (2, 3, 7, 8), or strong (9, 10, Ace).

  • Weak dealer: Play conservatively, stand early, let them bust
  • Strong dealer: Hit aggressively, you need to build a better hand
  • Neutral: Follow basic strategy precisely โ€” the math matters most here
