How Chain Reaction Works

Each cell on the grid has a critical mass equal to the number of neighboring cells:

• Corner cells: critical mass of 2
• Edge cells: critical mass of 3
• Center cells: critical mass of 4

On your turn, place one orb in any empty cell or in a cell you already own.

When a cell reaches critical mass, it explodes — all its orbs fly out to neighboring cells, converting them to your color. If those neighbors then reach their critical mass, they explode too.

Chain reactions happen when explosions trigger more explosions, potentially flipping dozens of cells in a single move.

You're eliminated when you have no orbs left on the board after every other player has taken at least one turn.

Chain Reaction Strategy Guide

Early Game: Claim the Corners

Corner cells have a critical mass of only 2. A corner orb explodes after just 2 orbs are placed — and once it does, it hits 2 cells simultaneously. Control the corners early and you'll have reliable explosion points throughout the game.

Mid Game: Build Critical Mass Safely

Don't explode prematurely. A cell with 1 orb less than critical mass is valuable — it's stable but ready to detonate. Build up cells near your opponents' clusters so when you do explode, you convert maximum territory.

Late Game: Trigger Cascades

In the endgame, one well-timed explosion can wipe out an opponent entirely. Look for cells that, when triggered, will chain into your opponent's high-density areas. The biggest chain reactions happen when you've been patiently building up adjacent clusters.

The Patience Trap

New players often try to explode as often as possible. Experienced players wait. A chain reaction is most powerful when your opponent has built up high-density clusters — those become fuel for your explosions.

Why Chain Reaction Is So Addictive

The game has perfect information — you can always see the board state — but the number of possible chain reaction sequences makes it nearly impossible to calculate everything. You're constantly making judgment calls about when to explode and when to hold back.
