Chain Reaction Web Game Free Online | Exploding Orbs

Chain Reaction is one of the most satisfying strategy games you can play in a browser. Place colored orbs on a grid, watch cells overflow and explode into neighboring cells, and trigger cascading chain reactions that flip entire sections of the board to your color. Last player standing wins.

Chain Reaction is available free online at PlayBrain with no download required. The game supports 2-8 players (against AI opponents) and plays on a grid where cells have limited capacity based on their position.

How Chain Reaction Works

Each cell on the grid has a critical mass equal to the number of neighboring cells:

  • Corner cells: critical mass of 2
  • Edge cells: critical mass of 3
  • Center cells: critical mass of 4

On your turn, place one orb in any empty cell or in a cell you already own.

When a cell reaches critical mass, it explodes โ€” all its orbs fly out to neighboring cells, converting them to your color. If those neighbors then reach their critical mass, they explode too.

Chain reactions happen when explosions trigger more explosions, potentially flipping dozens of cells in a single move.

You're eliminated when you have no orbs left on the board after every other player has taken at least one turn.

Chain Reaction Strategy Guide

Early Game: Claim the Corners

Corner cells have a critical mass of only 2. A corner orb explodes after just 2 orbs are placed โ€” and once it does, it hits 2 cells simultaneously. Control the corners early and you'll have reliable explosion points throughout the game.

Mid Game: Build Critical Mass Safely

Don't explode prematurely. A cell with 1 orb less than critical mass is valuable โ€” it's stable but ready to detonate. Build up cells near your opponents' clusters so when you do explode, you convert maximum territory.

Late Game: Trigger Cascades

In the endgame, one well-timed explosion can wipe out an opponent entirely. Look for cells that, when triggered, will chain into your opponent's high-density areas. The biggest chain reactions happen when you've been patiently building up adjacent clusters.

The Patience Trap

New players often try to explode as often as possible. Experienced players wait. A chain reaction is most powerful when your opponent has built up high-density clusters โ€” those become fuel for your explosions.

Why Chain Reaction Is So Addictive

The game has perfect information โ€” you can always see the board state โ€” but the number of possible chain reaction sequences makes it nearly impossible to calculate everything. You're constantly making judgment calls about when to explode and when to hold back.

It's also one of the few games where you can be completely dominated and then flip the board in a single move. That comeback potential keeps every game tense until the very end.

Frequently Asked Questions about Chain Reaction Web Game Free Online | Exploding Orbs

How do you win Chain Reaction every time?
Focus on corner and edge cells first since they have fewer neighbors and overflow with fewer orbs. Build up density in areas adjacent to opponent clusters so your explosions chain into their territory. Patience is key: wait until opponents have built dense clusters before triggering your chain reactions.
What is the Chain Reaction web game?
Chain Reaction is a strategy game where players take turns placing colored orbs on a grid. When a cell fills to its capacity (based on position), it explodes and sends orbs into adjacent cells, which can trigger further explosions. The goal is to own all cells by turning them your color.
How many players can play Chain Reaction?
Chain Reaction supports 2-8 players. On PlayBrain, you play against AI opponents. The game is designed for 2-6 players for best balance โ€” with 2 players it is a focused duel, with 4-6 it becomes a chaotic multi-faction battle where alliances and timing matter more.
Is Chain Reaction a math game?
Chain Reaction involves counting (each cell has a fixed capacity: corner=1, edge=2, interior=3) and spatial reasoning (predicting chain reaction spread), but it is more of a strategy game than a math game. The math is simple; the complexity comes from anticipating cascading explosions.
