What Makes a Roguelike?
Roguelikes take their name from the 1980 game Rogue: a text-based dungeon crawler with procedurally generated levels and permanent death. Every run started fresh, every death was final, and the only thing you kept was knowledge.
Roguelike vs. Roguelite
Pure roguelikes have no persistent progression between runs โ you start from zero every time. Roguelites add permanent upgrades or unlocks that carry over, making each run slightly more powerful. Most modern browser roguelikes (including Deck Quest and IdleRealm) are technically roguelites, but the terms are used interchangeably.
Deckbuilder Roguelikes
The deckbuilder subgenre was popularized by Slay the Spire. You build a card deck as you progress, choosing which cards to add or remove after each fight. Deck Quest brings this structure to the browser for free โ three acts, 24 cards, 10 relics, and true permadeath.
Survival Roguelites
Survival roguelites ask โhow long can you last?โ rather than โhow far can you go?โ Resources randomize between runs, so each attempt plays out differently. Survival Clicker is the closest free browser equivalent to the genre.
Idle & Incremental Roguelites
Idle roguelites blend the โprestige and resetโ mechanic from idle games with roguelike structure. Each reset runs faster than the last. IdleRealm takes this furthest โ train 10 skills, fight across 7 worlds, and craft gear that reshapes your power curve each run. It holds a 0% bounce rate across all tracked PlayBrain sessions.
