Yahtzee is one of the most popular dice games ever made. It's easy to learn in five minutes, but takes real strategy to score consistently above 200 points. This guide covers everything: the full rules, all 13 scoring categories, the upper section bonus, and the strategies that separate lucky rollers from consistent high scorers.

How to Play Yahtzee

Each turn, you get up to three rolls of five dice. After the first roll, you can keep any dice you want and reroll the rest. After the second roll, you can keep and reroll again. After the third roll (or whenever you stop), you must score in one of the 13 categories.

You can only score in each category once per game. Once all 13 categories are filled, the game ends and scores are totaled.

The 13 Scoring Categories

Upper Section (Aces through Sixes)

Score the sum of all dice matching that number:

  • Aces (1s): Total of all 1s rolled
  • Twos: Total of all 2s rolled
  • Threes: Total of all 3s rolled
  • Fours: Total of all 4s rolled
  • Fives: Total of all 5s rolled
  • Sixes: Total of all 6s rolled

Upper Section Bonus: Score 63+ points in the upper section to earn 35 bonus points. This is the single most important rule in Yahtzee. The 35-point bonus swings games dramatically.

Lower Section

  • Three of a Kind: At least 3 matching dice. Score = total of all 5 dice.
  • Four of a Kind: At least 4 matching dice. Score = total of all 5 dice.
  • Full House: Three of one number + two of another. Score = 25 points (fixed).
  • Small Straight: Four sequential dice (e.g. 1-2-3-4). Score = 30 points.
  • Large Straight: Five sequential dice (e.g. 2-3-4-5-6). Score = 40 points.
  • Yahtzee: Five of the same number. Score = 50 points.
  • Chance: Any combination of dice. Score = total of all 5 dice.

Yahtzee Bonus

If you've already scored a Yahtzee and roll another one later, you earn 100 bonus points each time. You also get to use the second Yahtzee as a joker in any lower section category (full rules apply), or score it in the upper section for the matching number.

Yahtzee Strategy: How to Score High

1. Prioritize the Upper Section Bonus

The 63-point threshold requires averaging 3 of each number (3 threes = 9, 4 fours = 16, etc.). Think of it as: score at least 3 of every number in the upper section. If you fill all six upper categories with the minimum (3 of each number) you hit exactly 63. The 35-point bonus is like a free Yahtzee โ€” you must pursue it.

Pro tip: If you're falling behind in the upper section, use your Chance category on a high-value roll to compensate points, but don't abandon the upper section bonus unless you're very behind.

2. Go for Yahtzee Early

Yahtzee bonuses (100 pts each) are the fastest route to elite scores. If you see three or four of a kind early in a turn, keep them and chase the Yahtzee. The worst that happens is you score it as Three or Four of a Kind.

3. Fill Low-Probability Categories Last

Large Straight (40 pts, needs 5 specific dice) and Small Straight (30 pts, needs 4 sequential) are hard to roll on demand. Leave them until you happen to roll them naturally, rather than forcing them.

4. Use Chance Wisely

Chance is your safety valve. Use it when you have a mediocre roll that doesn't fit any open category well. Don't waste it early โ€” keep it for a turn where you'd otherwise score 0 in a good category.

5. Strategic Zeros (the Sacrifice)

Sometimes you'll have to sacrifice a category, scoring 0. When you must sacrifice, choose the category with the lowest expected value that you're unlikely to fill anyway. Small Straight is often a good sacrifice if you're far from sequential dice.

What's a Good Yahtzee Score?

ScoreLevel
Under 150Beginner
150-200Average
200-250Good
250-300Strong
300+Expert
1,575Theoretical maximum (Yahtzee every turn)

A score of 250+ puts you in strong territory. With the upper bonus (35 pts) and at least one Yahtzee (50 pts), you have 85 automatic bonus points before counting your main scores.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Ignoring the upper bonus. This is the #1 mistake. Players get excited chasing Yahtzees and neglect the upper section, then miss the 35-point bonus and lose the game even with good lower-section scores.

Using Chance too early. Chance becomes more valuable as the game goes on and your options narrow. Use it as a last resort.

Sacrificing Yahtzee first. Players sometimes score 0 in the Yahtzee category early to "get it out of the way." This is almost always wrong. Even a small chance of rolling Yahtzee + bonus is worth keeping it available.

Not pressing your luck enough. If you have three sixes on the first roll, keep all three and reroll the other two dice twice. Chasing Four of a Kind or Yahtzee is often worth it.

Frequently Asked Questions about Yahtzee Free Online | Rules, Scoring & Strategy Guide

What are the basic rules of Yahtzee?
Roll 5 dice up to 3 times per turn. After rolling, choose which dice to keep and reroll the rest. Score in one of 13 categories by selecting a category after your final roll. Each category can only be used once. Highest total score at the end wins.
What is the best Yahtzee strategy?
Prioritize the upper section bonus (score at least 63 points in the top 6 categories for a 35-point bonus). Always try to three-of-a-kind the top categories early. Keep Yahtzee open as long as possible since the 50-point bonus and extra Yahtzee bonuses are massive.
When should you fill in a zero in Yahtzee?
Sacrifice Chance only if you have a terrible roll with no other useful category. Never sacrifice Yahtzee early. Sacrifice 1s or 2s in the upper section if you've already secured the bonus. Filling 0 in a lower category hurts more than filling 0 in a low upper category.
What is a good Yahtzee score?
A score of 200-250 is solid. 250-300 is strong play. With the upper bonus (35 pts) and at least one Yahtzee (50 pts), you have 85 automatic bonus points. Expert players average 250+ regularly. The theoretical maximum is 1,575 (Yahtzee every turn).
Is Yahtzee free to play online?
Yes. PlayBrain's Yahtzee is free in your browser with no download or account. Features full 13-category scoring, automatic bonus tracking, and smart AI opponent. Works on desktop and mobile.
