Ludo is one of the most popular board games in the world, played by hundreds of millions of people across South Asia, Africa, and beyond. It looks simple โ€” roll dice, move tokens โ€” but experienced players know it's full of tactical decisions. This guide covers the full rules and the strategies that separate winners from runners-up.

How to Play Ludo: The Complete Rules

Setup

Each player has 4 tokens of their color, starting in the colored base (home area) at the corners of the board. The goal is to move all 4 tokens along the outer track, up the colored column, and into the home triangle at the center.

Starting a Token

You must roll a 6 to bring a token out of your base onto the starting square. Tokens in the base cannot move until you roll a 6.

After rolling a 6, you can either:

  1. Bring a new token onto the board, OR
  2. Move an existing token 6 spaces

After any roll of 6, you get a bonus roll.

Moving Tokens

Each turn you roll once and move one token by that many squares. You choose which token to move.

  • Bonus rolls: Rolling a 6 grants an extra roll. Three 6s in a row forfeits your turn.
  • Captures: Land on a square with an opponent's token and send it back to their base.
  • Safe squares: Marked squares (usually starred) protect tokens from capture.
  • Home column: The final colored column before the home triangle is exclusive to your color โ€” opponents cannot capture you there.
  • Winning: First player to get all 4 tokens to the home triangle wins.

Ludo Strategy: How to Win

1. Get Multiple Tokens Out Early

The biggest mistake beginners make is focusing on one token and racing it to the finish while leaving the others stuck in base. A single captured token loses all its progress. Spread your risk by bringing out 2-3 tokens before pushing any one toward home.

2. Use the 6 Bonus Roll Strategically

When you roll a 6, you choose whether to bring out a new token or advance an existing one. If you have tokens close to a safe square or the home column, prioritize advancing them. If all your tokens are near danger, bringing out a new token to build a backup can save the game.

3. Prioritize Safe Squares

Tokens on safe squares cannot be captured. When you have multiple movement options, moving a token onto a safe square is almost always better than advancing a token by a few spaces in open territory.

4. Block and Capture When Possible

If an opponent's token is just ahead of yours, chase it down. Captures send their token all the way back to base, costing them many turns to recover. This is especially punishing late in the game when they've nearly made it around the board.

5. Race vs. Block: Know When to Switch

Early game: race to get tokens out and spread them around the board.

Mid game: mix racing with opportunistic captures when you can without significant detour.

Late game: if you're ahead, race your tokens home. If you're behind, switch to aggressive blocking and capture mode to slow leaders down.

6. Home Column Safety

Once a token enters your colored home column (the last stretch before the triangle), it's safe from capture. Prioritize getting vulnerable tokens to their home column, especially if opponents are close behind.

7. Token Priority

Don't move every token equally. Identify your most advanced token (closest to home) and your most threatened token. Usually: keep advancing your frontrunner while protecting your most vulnerable token.

Common Mistakes in Ludo

Ignoring tokens in base. Leaving tokens in base too long means less flexibility and fewer options each turn.

Over-committing one token. Racing one token far ahead while three sit in base makes you vulnerable โ€” one bad dice run or capture and you've wasted many turns.

Not using safe squares. New players often advance past a safe square by one space, leaving themselves exposed. Count carefully.

Chasing too aggressively. Sometimes chasing an opponent's token costs you more turns than the capture is worth, especially if it takes you backwards.

Frequently Asked Questions about Ludo Free Online | Rules, Strategies & How to Win

How do you win at Ludo every time?
There is no guaranteed win in Ludo since it involves dice, but top strategies are: bring tokens out early on every 6, use safe squares to protect advanced tokens, chase and capture opponents when they are close behind you, and race your frontrunner home while protecting other tokens from capture.
What are the rules for Ludo?
Each player has 4 tokens starting in base. Roll a 6 to bring a token into play. Move tokens clockwise around the board. Land on an opponent's token to send it back to base. Tokens on colored safe squares cannot be captured. First player to move all 4 tokens into the home triangle wins.
Can you play Ludo online against AI?
Yes. PlayBrain has free online Ludo with smart AI opponents. No download or account required. The game includes dice rolling, token captures, safe squares, and full home-column rules. Works on desktop and mobile browsers.
What is the best first move in Ludo?
When you roll a 6, always bring out a new token unless you have a token that is one move away from a safe square or almost home. Having multiple tokens in play gives you more flexibility on future turns and makes you harder to completely shut down.
