Tetris is arguably the most recognized video game in history. Since its creation in 1984, it has been played on virtually every platform imaginable โ€” from the original Game Boy to modern smartphones. And now you can play Tetris free online right in your browser on PlayBrain.

A Brief History of Tetris

Tetris was created by Alexey Pajitnov, a Soviet computer scientist working at the Moscow Academy of Sciences. He was inspired by pentomino puzzles โ€” geometric shapes made of five squares. He simplified the concept to four squares (hence "Tetris," from the Greek prefix "tetra" meaning four) and programmed the first version on an Electronika 60 computer.

The game spread like wildfire across the Soviet Union before making its way to the West. Nintendo bundled it with the Game Boy in 1989, and the rest is history. Tetris has sold over 500 million copies across all platforms, making it one of the best-selling games of all time.

How to Play

Seven differently-shaped pieces (called tetrominoes) fall from the top of the screen one at a time. You can move them left or right, rotate them, and speed up their descent. Your goal is to arrange the pieces so they form complete horizontal lines. When a line is complete, it disappears, and everything above it drops down. The game ends when the pieces stack up to the top.

The seven tetrominoes: I-piece (long bar), O-piece (square), T-piece, S-piece, Z-piece, L-piece, and J-piece. Learning how each piece rotates is fundamental to getting better.

Essential Tetris Strategies

Keep the Board Flat

The number one rule for beginners: keep your stack as flat and even as possible. Avoid creating deep holes or tall towers. A flat surface gives you maximum flexibility to place any piece that comes next.

Leave a Column Open for the I-Piece

The I-piece (the long straight bar) is the most valuable piece because it can clear four lines at once โ€” called a "Tetris." Many experienced players leave the rightmost or leftmost column empty, building up four rows, then dropping the I-piece in for a massive score boost.

Use the Preview Window

Always check what piece is coming next. This lets you plan your current placement based on what follows. Placing a piece without considering the next one is a recipe for stacking problems.

Learn T-Spins

Once you are comfortable with the basics, learn T-spins. A T-spin is when you rotate the T-piece into a tight gap. T-spin doubles and triples award bonus points and send extra garbage lines in competitive play.

Play Faster, Not Just Better

Speed matters in Tetris. The faster you make decisions, the more time you have to adjust. Practice making placement decisions while the piece is still at the top of the screen, not when it is halfway down.

Scoring Breakdown

  • Single line clear: 100 points
  • Double (2 lines): 300 points
  • Triple (3 lines): 500 points
  • Tetris (4 lines): 800 points

Clearing four lines at once gives you disproportionately more points, which is why saving up for Tetrises is the optimal scoring strategy.

Common Mistakes

  • Building too high on one side โ€” this limits where you can place pieces and leads to panic stacking.
  • Ignoring the next piece โ€” always plan one step ahead.
  • Never rotating pieces โ€” learn all the rotation positions for each piece.
  • Playing too slowly at low levels โ€” use early levels to practice speed so higher levels feel manageable.
