Pac-Man is the most recognizable video game character in history โ even more recognized than Mario in some surveys. Created by Toru Iwatani at Namco in 1980, this yellow circle munching dots in a maze has earned over $14 billion in revenue, making it one of the highest-grossing entertainment franchises ever.

The History of Pac-Man
Toru Iwatani wanted to create a game that would appeal to women and couples โ a contrast to the space shooters and sports games that dominated arcades in the late 1970s. His inspiration came from a pizza with a slice removed, which gave him the iconic shape.
The original Japanese name was "Puck Man" (from the Japanese "paku paku," the sound of a mouth opening and closing). It was changed to "Pac-Man" for the Western release to prevent vandalism of the arcade cabinet โ you can guess what letter people might change the P to.
When Pac-Man hit arcades in 1980, it was an instant phenomenon. It sold over 400,000 cabinets and generated $3.5 billion in quarters by 1990 (equivalent to about $8 billion today). It was the first game to have licensed merchandise, a hit single ("Pac-Man Fever"), and a Saturday morning cartoon.
How the Ghost AI Works
The four ghosts are not random. Each one has a distinct personality programmed into its behavior, and understanding them is the key to mastering the game.
Blinky (Red) โ The Shadow
Blinky directly targets Pac-Man's current position. He is the most aggressive ghost and gets faster as you eat more dots (a behavior called "cruise elroy"). In later levels, Blinky is essentially always in pursuit mode.
Pinky (Pink) โ The Ambusher
Pinky does not chase Pac-Man directly. Instead, she targets the space four tiles ahead of where Pac-Man is facing. She tries to get in front of you and cut you off. The counter-strategy: turn around when Pinky is approaching head-on, and she will overshoot.
Inky (Cyan) โ The Unpredictable One
Inky's targeting is the most complex. He uses a vector from Blinky's position through a point two tiles ahead of Pac-Man, then doubles it. This means Inky's behavior depends on where Blinky is, making him genuinely unpredictable. When Blinky is far away, Inky can end up targeting seemingly random spots.
Clyde (Orange) โ The Shy One
Clyde chases Pac-Man like Blinky when he is more than 8 tiles away. But when he gets within 8 tiles, he retreats to his scatter corner (bottom-left). This creates a pattern where Clyde approaches, then runs away, then approaches again. He is the least dangerous ghost.
Scatter Mode
Every few seconds, all ghosts switch from "chase" mode to "scatter" mode, where each ghost retreats to its assigned corner of the maze. This creates brief windows of safety that skilled players exploit. The timing of scatter phases gets shorter in later levels.
Pro Strategies
Learn the Safe Spots
There are specific positions in the maze where ghosts physically cannot reach you due to their movement rules. The areas just above the ghost house and certain T-intersections create natural safe zones during scatter mode.
Save Power Pellets
Do not eat power pellets (the big dots in the corners) immediately. Save them for when ghosts are close. Eating a power pellet when ghosts are far away wastes the vulnerable time chasing them down. Eating one when three ghosts are nearby means three easy kills.
Use the Tunnel
The side tunnels slow ghosts down significantly but do not slow Pac-Man. Use them to create distance when being chased. This is especially effective against Blinky.
Clear One Side First
Eat all the dots on one side of the maze before moving to the other side. This prevents situations where you have to cross back and forth through dangerous territory for scattered remaining dots.
The Grouping Trick
Ghosts tend to cluster together. When they do, they are easier to avoid because they move as a pack. If ghosts are spread across the maze, they cover more area and are harder to dodge.
The Kill Screen
The original arcade Pac-Man has 255 levels. Level 256 is the famous "kill screen" โ a bug causes the right half of the maze to fill with garbled text and symbols, making it unplayable. Only a handful of people have ever reached it, most notably Billy Mitchell (controversially) and later verified players.
The first person to achieve a verified perfect Pac-Man score of 3,333,360 points was Billy Mitchell in 1999 โ eating every dot, power pellet, fruit, and ghost on all 255 levels without losing a single life.
