How to Play Dominoes

Each domino tile has two halves, each showing a number of dots (pips) from zero to six. In the most common variant, you and your opponent take turns placing tiles end-to-end, matching the number on one end of your tile with the number on the open end of the chain.

If you cannot play a tile from your hand, you draw from the boneyard (the remaining face-down tiles). The first player to empty their hand wins the round, and the winner scores points based on the total pips remaining in the loser's hand.

Strategy Tips for Winning

Play your doubles early. Double tiles (same number on both halves) are harder to play because they can only match one number. Getting them out of your hand early prevents them from becoming deadweight later.

Pay attention to what your opponent draws. If your opponent cannot play and has to draw, they are short on whatever number is currently open on the board. Use this information to keep playing that number and force more draws.

Keep your hand diverse. Try to maintain tiles with a variety of different numbers. This gives you more options on each turn and reduces the chance of being forced to draw.

Count the tiles. There are 28 tiles in a standard set (double-six). As the game progresses, you can deduce what tiles your opponent likely holds based on what has been played and what you have in your hand.

Block when you are ahead. If you have fewer tiles than your opponent, try to play numbers they are unlikely to have. Forcing draws benefits you because even if neither player empties their hand, the player with fewer total pips wins.

Scoring Strategy

In many scoring variants, certain totals on the open ends of the board earn you points during play (multiples of five, for example). Learning to count the board total and play tiles that create scoring opportunities is what separates good players from great ones.

Think about the board total before each play. If the open ends currently total 10, and you have a tile that would change one end from a 5 to a 3, the new total would be 8. But if you have a tile that changes it to a 0, the total becomes 5, and that scores points.

Why Dominoes Is a Brilliant Game

Dominoes sits in a sweet spot between pure strategy and chance. You cannot control what tiles you draw, but you absolutely can control how you play them. Good players win significantly more often than bad players, which means skill matters, but the randomness keeps every game fresh.

The game also teaches probability thinking. With practice, you learn to estimate the odds of your opponent having certain tiles, and you make plays that are statistically favorable even when you cannot know for sure.

Variations Worth Knowing

Block dominoes is the simplest variant. No drawing from the boneyard; if you cannot play, you just pass. The round ends when no one can play, and the lowest pip count wins.

All Fives (also called Muggins) rewards you for making the open ends of the chain add up to multiples of five. This adds a scoring layer that makes every tile placement a strategic decision.
