Melody Guess is a music trivia game where you identify famous songs using progressive clues, no audio required. You get six clues per song, and the earlier you guess correctly, the more points you earn. Free to play at PlayBrain, with a daily mode and unlimited practice.

How Melody Guess Works

Each of the 10 rounds presents a mystery song. Six clues are revealed one at a time:

ClueWhat It ShowsPoints If Correct
1Genre + decade6
2Rhythm pattern (dots showing beat emphasis)5
3Title initials (e.g., "S.M.I.T.W." = "Shape of My Heart")4
4Artist's first name3
5Full artist name2
6Lyric snippet1

Maximum score per round is 6. Maximum total score is 60.

Reading the Rhythm Pattern Clue

Clue 2 is the trickiest because it's visual. You'll see filled circles (strong beats) and empty circles (weak beats) representing the song's rhythmic feel.

What to do with it:

  • Match the number of circles to the song's syllable count or phrase length
  • Look at where the emphasis falls โ€” a pattern heavy at the start vs the end feels different
  • Cross-reference with the genre (e.g., a syncopated pattern in Pop points somewhere different than the same pattern in Classic Rock)

You won't get it from rhythm alone usually, but combining it with clue 1 narrows the field significantly.

Strategy for Early Guesses

Work the genre + decade combination hard. Clue 1 alone isn't enough to guess most songs, but it should give you 3-5 strong candidates to hold mentally. Before even seeing clue 2, think: what are the most famous songs in this genre from this decade?

Initials are more powerful than they look. "B.I.T.U." is easy to overlook, but count the words, think about common song title structures ("Back in the..." or "Blame it the..."), and the answer often clicks.

Use the multiple-choice option when unsure. If you're between two options after clue 3, take the multiple choice rather than typing a guess โ€” wrong typed answers don't cost you but wrong clicks also don't cost you in Melody Guess, so use the safety net.

Daily mode is harder than practice. Daily songs are the same for everyone worldwide each day, and the selection tends toward globally recognizable tracks. Practice mode sometimes includes more niche picks.

Improving Your Score

The main difference between average and high scores is clue 3 guesses vs clue 5 guesses. Players who can commit to a title initials guess get 4 points instead of 2. That's a 20-point swing across 10 rounds.

Focus on training yourself to:

  1. Recognize common song title patterns from initials
  2. Trust the rhythm clue to eliminate wrong guesses even if you can't pin the exact song

Frequently Asked Questions about Melody Guess Free Online | Music Guessing Game Tips

What is the Melody Guess game?
Melody Guess is a daily music identification game where you hear a short clip of a song (often starting at just 1 second, extending with each wrong guess) and must identify the title and artist. It's similar to Heardle (the music Wordle). The shorter the clip you need, the better your score.
Is Heardle still available in 2026?
The original Heardle was shut down by Spotify (which acquired it) in August 2023. Several alternatives continue the same format: Musicle, SongTrivia, Bandle, and site-specific versions for genres (HipHop Heardle, Kpop Heardle, etc.). PlayBrain has a melody guessing game available free.
How can I get better at music guessing games?
Improve at music guessing: (1) Focus on intro patterns โ€” many songs have distinctive 1-2 second intros. (2) Learn artist signatures โ€” production styles and vocal tones are often recognizable before lyrics. (3) Pay attention to drum patterns and bass lines in the first second. (4) Play daily to build pattern recognition across genres.
