How to Play Hive Words

You see 7 hexagonal tiles: 1 center tile (highlighted in gold) and 6 surrounding tiles. To form a valid word:

• The word must be at least 4 letters long
• Every word must contain the center letter
• Letters can be reused within a word (e.g., center letter can appear twice)
• Common words and proper nouns don't count

Scoring System

4-letter words are worth just 1 point no matter what. Once you hit 5+ letters, every letter counts. A 7-letter word that isn't a pangram earns 7 points. A 7-letter pangram earns 14 points (7 letters + 7 bonus).

Reaching Genius (90%) is a strong performance. Queen Bee requires finding every valid word in the puzzle — typically a serious challenge that requires systematic searching.

What Is a Pangram?

A pangram in Hive Words is a word that uses all 7 honeycomb letters at least once. Every puzzle has at least one pangram hidden in its word list.

When you find one, it appears with a star symbol in your found-words list and gives you the word's base score plus an extra 7 points.

How to find pangrams:

• Look for 7+ letter words that could plausibly use all 6 outer letters plus the center
• Think about word roots with lots of consonant variety (words with uncommon letter combos)
• If you're stuck, try working backwards from potential pangram structures — what 7-letter word could you build from these specific letters?

Strategy to Reach Genius

Start with short words to warm up, but don't get stuck on 4-letter words. They're only worth 1 point each. You need volume of short words OR quality of long words.

Look for word families. If you find "BAKING," look for "BAKER," "BAKED," "BAKES" — related words cluster around the same root and often all work.

Reuse the center letter liberally. Many players forget that the center letter can appear multiple times in one word. "MINIMAL" with center letter M uses M twice.

Work prefixes and suffixes. Once you have a root word, try adding -ING, -ED, -ER, -LY, -NESS, -TION. Many of these will be valid if the letters are available.

Shuffle the tiles occasionally. The Shuffle button rearranges the outer 6 tiles. A fresh visual layout often triggers new word connections your brain missed in the original arrangement.
