Games Like Plague Inc You Can Play Free in a Browser

By PlayBrain Team··6 min read

Plague Inc is a paid app for phones, plus a PC and console version. There is no official browser version, and most "play it online" pages you find are fake download pages or old copies. If what you love is the loop (pick a start, watch your colour spread across the world map, spend points on upgrades and race a clock), there are good options that are honest about what they are.

Want to play one right now, free and with no download? Play World Takeover Simulator in your browser.

1. World Takeover Simulator (free, browser)

Our own game, built for people who want the spread-the-map loop without an app store. You play a comic 1960s spy-movie villain with a volcano lair and a smug cat. Pick a first base on a real world map of 46 regions, then spread your fan club with TV, the Internet, trade routes and secret agents. A hero alliance called the Agency works on a counter-plan, and its bar is your clock.

What it borrows from the genre, and what it fixes:

  • A clock you can read. The Agency bar shows how many weeks it needs at its current speed, and every region you win over takes research away from it.
  • No late-game drought. You always earn a minimum of Schemes each week, so you can still buy upgrades at the end.
  • No unreachable islands. Islands close their ports when the alarm is high, but agents can reach any region.
  • Every event card pauses the game.

Nobody is hurt: regions join your fan club through jingles, gadgets and free ice cream, so it is fine for school. Runs take 8 to 12 minutes, there are five villains to unlock, three difficulties, and a Daily Scheme that is the same for everyone each day.

2. Plague Inc (paid app)

The game that made the genre famous, by Ndemic Creations (2012). It is on iOS, Android, Steam and consoles. If you want the original with all its special modes, buy it from an official store; skip "free online" copies, which are usually not what they claim.

3. The Shadow Government Simulator (Steam, paid)

A secret society quietly takes over countries through bribes and favours. It is the closest premise to a world takeover game on PC. Reviewers liked the idea and found it repetitive over long sessions.

4. Universal Paperclips (free, browser)

A text-only game about a machine that makes paperclips, and then keeps going. No map, but the same thrill of a number that grows until it covers the world, and an ending worth reaching. Free in any browser.

5. territorial.io (free, browser)

A land-grab on a map against many other players, with rounds under five minutes. It is a war-style game rather than a spread game, but it scratches the "watch my colour cover the map" itch fast.

Where did this kind of game come from?

Before the phone version, the best-known map spread game was Pandemic 2, a 2008 Flash game. When browsers dropped Flash, it survived only in copies on old game sites. That is why so many people still search for a browser version: the demand stayed when the games left.

Which one should you pick?

  • On a school or work computer: World Takeover Simulator or Universal Paperclips. Both run in the browser with no install.
  • You want the original: buy Plague Inc from an official store.
  • You want a slower PC game about secret influence: The Shadow Government Simulator.
