Frequently Asked Questions about Sky Island Racer

How do you drift in Sky Island Racer?
Hold the Down arrow while you turn at speed. The back of the car swings out and you slide through the corner. Keep holding through the bend, then let go on the exit: the car grips again and fires a mini-turbo. The sparks turn blue, then orange the longer the drift lasts, and orange gives the bigger boost. Space or Shift also start a drift.
What are the controls?
Up arrow or W to accelerate, Left and Right (or A and D) to steer, Down or S to brake. Hold Down while turning to drift. R restarts the race, M turns the sound off and on, and Esc goes back to the level select. On a phone or tablet there are touch buttons for steering, gas, brake and drift.
How do medals work?
Each race is one lap against the clock. Every level has bronze, silver and gold target times, shown on the results card. Gold usually needs clean drifts with boosts through the big corners. Your best time, split times and ghost car save in this browser.
What is the ghost car?
After your first finish, a see-through ghost car replays your best run on that level. Race it to see where you lose time, and watch the split times at each checkpoint: green means you are ahead of your best, red means behind.
Is Sky Island Racer the same as PolyTrack?
No. Sky Island Racer is PlayBrain's own free 3D drift racer, built for the browser. It has time trials, a ghost car and medals like many track racers, but it is not PolyTrack, has no track editor and is not affiliated with PolyTrack's maker.
Does it work on a school Chromebook?
Yes. It runs in Chrome with no download or plugin. If the computer is slow, the game lowers its own graphics settings after a few seconds so the frame rate stays smooth.
Is Sky Island Racer free?
Yes, it is free to play in your browser with no download and no sign-up.

About Sky Island Racer

Sky Island Racer is a free 3D drift racer you play in your browser. The roads float between grassy islands high in the sky, with waterfalls dropping off their edges and clouds below. Every race is a single lap against the clock with seven checkpoints, and each checkpoint shows your split against your best run, so you always know where the time went. Beat the level's bronze, silver and gold targets to earn up to three stars.

Drifting is the skill that wins gold. Flat out, the car runs wide in the big corners; hold the brake while turning and the back swings out, the car keeps its speed and slides round, and letting go fires a mini-turbo. Drift Valley is the place to learn it: a wide road with long sweepers and two hairpins. Sky Circuit adds a loop, a jump and open edges where a mistake drops you off the road. After your first finish a ghost car replays your best lap, so every race is a duel with yourself.

It runs in Chrome on school Chromebooks and laptops with no download, and turns its own graphics down on a slow computer so the driving stays smooth. On a phone there are touch buttons, but a keyboard is best.
