Frequently Asked Questions about Redactle

What is Redactle and how do you play?
Redactle is a word guessing game where you try to identify a Wikipedia article. The article text is shown with most words redacted (hidden behind black bars). Common words like 'the', 'is', 'and', and 'of' are visible to help you understand sentence structure. You type single-word guesses, and if your word appears in the article, all instances are revealed. Your goal is to figure out the article's topic and guess the title in as few guesses as possible.
Which words are already visible in Redactle?
Common English words are left unredacted so you can read the basic sentence structure. These include articles (a, an, the), common verbs (is, was, were, are, have, has, had, do, does, did), modal verbs (will, would, could, should, may, might, can), prepositions (of, in, to, for, on, with, at, by, from), conjunctions (and, or, but, if), and pronouns (it, he, she, they, them, this, that, these, those). All other meaningful words are hidden.
Is there a daily Redactle puzzle?
Yes. The Daily mode selects the same article for all players on any given day using a date-based system. You can play the daily puzzle once per day. There is also a Practice mode where you can play unlimited rounds with randomly selected articles from the collection. Your best scores are saved for both modes.
What counts as a good Redactle score?
Your score is based on the number of guesses it takes to identify the article. Fewer guesses means a better score. Solving in under 20 guesses is considered excellent, under 50 is good, and under 100 is respectable. The accuracy percentage shows how much of the article you have revealed. Strategic guessing of broad topic words can help you narrow down the subject quickly.
Can I share my Redactle results with friends?
Yes. After solving the puzzle or giving up, you can click the Share Results button to copy a summary to your clipboard. The share text includes the puzzle number, your total guesses, and your accuracy percentage without revealing the answer. You can paste this into social media, messages, or group chats to compare with friends.
