Frequently Asked Questions about Minesweeper

How do I play Minesweeper?
Click on cells to reveal them. Numbers show how many mines are adjacent to that cell. Right-click (or long-press on mobile) to flag suspected mines. Clear all non-mine cells to win.
What do the numbers mean in Minesweeper?
Each number tells you how many of the 8 surrounding cells contain a mine. A '1' means exactly one adjacent cell has a mine, '2' means two adjacent mines, and so on.
Is Minesweeper free to play online?
Yes! PlayBrain's Minesweeper is completely free with three difficulty levels: Beginner (9x9, 10 mines), Intermediate (16x16, 40 mines), and Expert (30x16, 99 mines).
What is the best Minesweeper strategy?
Start by clicking near the center. Use the 1-2-1 and 1-1 patterns to identify safe cells. Flag obvious mines first, then work outward from known safe areas. Sometimes you'll need to guess on 50/50 situations.
Can I play Minesweeper on my phone?
Yes! Tap to reveal cells and long-press to flag. The game adapts to your screen size and works on any mobile browser.

About Minesweeper

Minesweeper was written by Robert Donner and Curt Johnson for Microsoft Windows 3.1 in 1990, and for the next two decades it shipped as a built-in application on virtually every Windows PC sold worldwide. Originally intended to help users become comfortable with left-click and right-click mouse interactions, it quickly evolved into a game with a passionate competitive community. The World Minesweeper rankings track completion times down to the hundredth of a second, with expert-level records sitting under 30 seconds for a 30x16 grid containing 99 mines. At its core, Minesweeper is a logic puzzle. Each revealed number tells you exactly how many of its eight neighboring cells contain a mine, and skilled players chain deductions across the board without ever needing to guess. PlayBrain's version offers Beginner, Intermediate, and Expert grids, a running timer, and flag tracking for a faithful desktop-quality experience in your browser.

How to Play

  1. Click any cell to reveal it. If it contains a number, that number indicates how many of the surrounding eight cells hide a mine.
  2. Right-click or long-press a cell to place a flag where you believe a mine is hidden. Use the F key on desktop for quick flagging.
  3. Use logical deduction: if a numbered cell already touches its full count of flagged mines, the remaining neighbors are safe to click.
  4. Reveal every safe cell on the board without clicking a mine to win. The timer records your completion speed for each difficulty level.
