About Hearts

Hearts is a beloved trick-taking card game for four players where the goal is to avoid collecting hearts and the dreaded Queen of Spades. Each heart in your tricks adds one penalty point, while the Queen of Spades adds a brutal thirteen. Before each hand, players pass three cards to an opponent, creating opportunities for strategic dumps. The player holding the two of clubs leads the first trick, and play proceeds clockwise. You must follow suit if possible, but if you are void in a suit you can slough unwanted cards. The game ends when someone hits 100 points, and the player with the lowest total wins. This version features three AI opponents with distinct playing styles.

How to Play

  1. Pass three cards to an opponent at the start of each hand to get rid of dangerous high cards
  2. Follow suit when a card is led; if void in that suit, discard hearts or the Queen of Spades
  3. Avoid winning tricks that contain hearts (1 point each) or the Queen of Spades (13 points)
  4. Alternatively, try to Shoot the Moon by collecting ALL hearts plus the Queen to give 26 points to everyone else
