Word Strands is a word puzzle where you connect adjacent letters in a grid to find themed words. Every letter must be used exactly once, and one special word called the "spangram" spans from one edge of the grid to another. It's one of the most satisfying word games around because solving it means accounting for every single letter on the board.
Play Word Strands Free
- Word Strands features a 6x8 grid with daily puzzles and random mode
- Word Strands Hard uses a larger 8x10 grid with harder themes
Both include hints and unlimited play.
How to Play
- Read the theme clue at the top of the board
- Connect adjacent letters (including diagonals) to spell themed words
- Found words turn blue and lock in place
- Find the spangram (turns yellow) that connects two edges of the grid
- Use every single letter on the board to complete the puzzle
Strategy Tips
Start with the spangram. It's usually the longest word and related to the theme. Since it spans edge-to-edge, look for long words that could stretch across the grid.
Read the theme carefully. The theme clue tells you what category all the words belong to. If the theme is "At the Beach," you're looking for words like SAND, WAVES, SURFBOARD.
Look for short words first. Three and four-letter words are easier to spot. Clearing them narrows down where longer words must go.
Use process of elimination. Once you've found most words, the remaining letters practically spell out the last word for you.
Diagonals are your friend. Don't just look horizontally and vertically. Many words connect through diagonal paths.
If stuck, try random connections. Sometimes dragging through letters reveals a word you weren't consciously looking for.
Work from the edges inward. Words at the edges of the grid have fewer possible paths, making them easier to identify. Clear those first and the center opens up.
Mentally group letter clusters. If you see a cluster like T-I-O-N sitting together, there's a good chance a word ends or passes through that group. Spotting common letter combos speeds up your search.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Ignoring the theme. The biggest mistake new players make is treating Strands like a generic word search. Every word relates to the theme, so if you're finding valid English words that don't fit the clue, you're wasting time. Let the theme guide your search.
Forgetting that every letter must be used. Unlike Boggle or a word search, Strands requires 100% letter coverage. If your found words leave a cluster of orphaned letters that can't form a themed word, at least one of your answers is probably wrong. Check your existing words before hunting for new ones.
Saving the spangram for last. While it can work, the spangram is usually easier to find early when the whole board is visible. Once you've locked in several shorter words, the remaining letter paths get fragmented and the spangram becomes harder to trace.
Not using hints when stuck. There's no penalty for using hints. If you've been staring at the board for five minutes, a hint that highlights one letter of a word can break your mental logjam without ruining the puzzle.
What Makes Strands Different from Other Word Games
Strands sits in a unique space compared to other popular word puzzles.
Strands vs Wordle: Wordle gives you six guesses to find one hidden word. Strands gives you a visible grid and asks you to find many words. Wordle is about deduction; Strands is about spatial pattern recognition. If you enjoy the "aha" moment of Wordle but want something that lasts longer, Strands is the natural next step.
Strands vs Boggle: Both involve finding words in a letter grid, but Boggle is a speed challenge where you find as many words as possible. Strands is a completion puzzle where you must find specific themed words and use every letter. Boggle rewards vocabulary breadth; Strands rewards careful observation.
Strands vs Crosswords: Crosswords give you clues for each word. Strands gives you one theme clue for all words. Crosswords are knowledge-based (you need to know facts and definitions). Strands is more visual and spatial, making it accessible even if you don't have encyclopedic knowledge.
The combination of theme-based searching, spatial path-finding, and the constraint that every letter must be used makes Strands feel genuinely fresh in a crowded word game market.
