Woodoku is a wood block puzzle that combines the spatial logic of Tetris with the grid structure of Sudoku. You get three blocks at a time and must place them on a 9x9 board to clear rows, columns, and 3x3 sub-grids. Run out of space with a piece you can't place and the game ends.

Most players score under 3,000 on their first few tries. With the right strategy you can reliably hit 10,000 and beyond. Here's everything you need to know.

How Woodoku Works

The basics: you're given three block shapes at the bottom of the screen. Drag or tap to place them anywhere on the 9x9 grid. When you completely fill a row, column, or 3x3 box, it clears and you score points. Clear multiple lines at once for combo bonuses. When none of your three current pieces can fit on the board, the game ends.

Unlike Tetris, pieces don't fall — you choose exactly where they go. That means every bad move is 100% your fault, and every good move is fully within your control.

Scoring Breakdown

The biggest scores come from setting up clears across multiple lines simultaneously. Placing one piece that clears 2 rows + 1 column + 1 box at the same time is a 4-line combo that can be worth several hundred points in a single move.

The Corner Strategy

Pick a corner — usually bottom-left or bottom-right — and build out from there. Keep your highest-density blocks in the corner and extend toward the center. This approach works because:

• Large L-shaped and square pieces fit naturally into corners
• It prevents "orphaned" single cells that no piece can fill
• It lets you set up row clears and column clears in sequence

Avoid spreading pieces randomly across the board. That leads to isolated gaps that slowly make the grid unplayable.

Managing the 3x3 Sub-Grids

The 9x9 Woodoku board is divided into nine 3x3 boxes, just like Sudoku. Clearing a 3x3 box counts the same as clearing a row or column — and it's often easier to set up. Key tips for 3x3 management:

• Fill corners of the 3x3 first. Single-cell gaps in box corners are hardest to fill later
• Watch for cross-clearing opportunities. A piece that fills the last cell of a row AND the last cell of a box at the same time doubles your score
• Don't sacrifice a 3x3 for a row. Clearing a box is worth just as much, and box fills often set up future row clears

Planning All 3 Pieces Together

This is the skill that separates good Woodoku players from great ones. Don't just place the first piece where it fits — look at all three pieces and decide in what order to place them to maximize clears.

Example: if piece 1 is a 3-wide horizontal bar and pieces 2 and 3 are smaller fills, place piece 1 last. Use pieces 2 and 3 to set up near-complete rows, then drop the bar to clear them all at once.

Sometimes the optimal order is counterintuitive. Take a moment before each set of three to see if there's a sequence that chains a combo.

Keeping the Center Open

The center of the 9x9 board is where rows and columns intersect most. Blocking the center with awkward pieces is the fastest way to kill a run. Practical rules:

• Prefer to place 1-cell or 2-cell fillers in the center, not large L-shapes
• If you have a choice between placing a piece center-left vs center-right, pick the side that leaves more flexibility for the next two pieces
• Never leave a 1x1 isolated gap in the center unless you have a 1x1 piece coming

Streak Bonuses: Don't Break the Chain

Woodoku rewards consecutive clears. If you clear at least one line with every piece you place, your streak counter grows and adds bonus points to each subsequent clear. Breaking the streak resets it to zero.

When you're on a streak, it's sometimes worth clearing a slightly suboptimal line just to keep the chain alive. A 20-point streak bonus on top of a regular clear often beats the 0 bonus you'd get from waiting for a perfect combo.

What to Do When You're Stuck

If none of your three pieces seem to fit anywhere useful:

1. Look for partial fills. Even if you can't clear a line, placing a piece in a densely packed area reduces future risk
2. Sacrifice a line setup to survive. Clearing any line is better than getting boxed out next turn
3. Rotate your strategy. If you've been building in one corner and it's full, shift attention to the opposite side

The game ends the moment you can't place any of your three pieces — not just one of them. So always check if at least one piece fits before panicking.
