Tic Tac Toe Strategy | How to Win (or Never Lose) Every Game

By PlayBrain Team··5 min read

Tic Tac Toe is one of the most analyzed games in history. Computer scientists call it "solved" because optimal play from both sides always ends in a draw. But that doesn't mean everyone plays optimally — and knowing the strategy means you can beat casual players every time, or at minimum guarantee you never lose.

The Hierarchy of Squares

Not all squares are equal. Before any specific strategy, understand the value of each position:

SquareValueWhy
CenterHighestPart of 4 winning lines
CornersHighPart of 3 winning lines each
EdgesLowestPart of only 2 winning lines

If you go first, always take the center. If the center is taken, take a corner. Avoid edges whenever possible.

Going First: The Center + Corner Attack

Best opening: take the center.

After taking the center, your goal is to set up a "fork" — a position where you have two ways to win simultaneously, making it impossible for your opponent to block both.

The most powerful first-player fork: Center → Corner → Opposite Corner

Example:

  1. X takes center (position 5)
  2. O takes any edge (the only safe response — corners are dangerous for O)
  3. X takes a corner
  4. O blocks somewhere
  5. X takes the corner diagonally opposite to step 3
  6. X now has a fork: two diagonal threats at once

If O makes any mistake on move 2 (takes a corner instead of an edge), X can win outright.

Going Second: The Defense Guide

If your opponent takes the center, take a corner. Never take an edge on move 1.

After taking a corner, your goal is to watch for forks. The general rules:

  1. Always block a winning threat. If your opponent has two in a row, block the third square.
  2. If you have two in a row, complete it. Win immediately.
  3. If neither: take a corner or create your own fork threat.

The one dangerous pattern to recognize: if X takes center and then takes a non-adjacent corner, O is in a fork trap if O doesn't play a corner. Always respond to center + corner openings by taking your own corner.

The Fork: How to Set Up an Unstoppable Win

A fork means having two different ways to get three in a row simultaneously. Your opponent can only block one, so you win on the next move.

How to create a fork:

  • Place pieces so that two different lines of attack each have two of your marks and an empty third square
  • Your opponent has to pick one to block — the other wins you the game

Common fork trap for X going first:

  1. X: center
  2. O: any move
  3. X: corner
  4. O: (doesn't block the diagonal threat)
  5. X: opposite corner — now X threatens both diagonals

How to PREVENT a fork:

  • If you see your opponent building toward a fork, create your own winning threat first. Force them to block you instead of completing their fork.

The "Never Lose" Rulebook

Follow these rules in order and you will never lose:

  1. Win: If you have two in a row and can complete it, do it.
  2. Block: If the opponent has two in a row, block the third square.
  3. Fork: If you can create a fork (two simultaneous winning threats), do it.
  4. Block a fork: If the opponent has a potential fork, block it — or create your own winning threat to force them to block you.
  5. Center: If none of the above apply, take the center.
  6. Opposite corner: If the opponent is in a corner, take the opposite corner.
  7. Empty corner: Take any empty corner.
  8. Empty edge: Take any empty edge.

Why the Center Is So Powerful

The center square participates in 4 lines: the two diagonals, the middle row, and the middle column. That's the most connections of any square. The corners each connect to 3 lines. The edges only connect to 2. This math is why center and corners dominate every game.

When the center is taken, the game shifts to corner control. Whoever controls more corners generally controls the game.

Is Tic Tac Toe Actually Fun?

Against a perfect opponent: no, it's a draw every time, and most people figure this out by age 8. But against imperfect play (or when you're learning fork tactics), it's a genuine puzzle.

For players who want more depth, Ultimate Tic Tac Toe takes the classic game and nests 9 boards inside a larger board. Every move you make in a small board sends your opponent to the corresponding large board position. The strategy depth jumps dramatically — forks become nested forks, and planning more than one move ahead is essential.

Quick Reference

You're going first? Center → watch for corner fork opportunities.

You're going second and opponent took center? Corner → block every fork threat.

Opponent took a corner? Take center if available, otherwise take an opposite corner.

Endgame rule: Win > Block > Fork > Block Fork > Center > Opposite Corner > Any Corner > Edge.

Master these and you won't just "get lucky" at Tic Tac Toe — you'll play the mathematically correct game every time.

Frequently Asked Questions about Tic Tac Toe Strategy | How to Win (or Never Lose) Every Game

What is the best first move in Tic Tac Toe?
The center square is the strongest opening. It gives you the most winning paths (4 lines) and forces your opponent to take a corner to avoid losing. Corner openings are second-best. Edge openings are the weakest.
Can you always win at Tic Tac Toe?
No. With perfect play from both sides, Tic Tac Toe always ends in a draw. The game is solved, meaning optimal play is known for every position. You can guarantee a draw as second player, and guarantee a win only if your opponent makes a mistake.
How do you set up a fork in Tic Tac Toe?
A fork creates two simultaneous winning threats that your opponent can only block one of. The most common fork starts with the center and two opposite corners. Your opponent cannot block both threats on the next move.
Is there an unbeatable Tic Tac Toe strategy?
Yes. As first player: take center, then corner opposite your opponent's response, then set up a fork. As second player: if opponent takes center, take a corner. Never take an edge square as your first move.
Is Tic Tac Toe free to play online?
Yes. PlayBrain's Tic Tac Toe is free in your browser with no download or account. Play against AI at easy, medium, or hard difficulty, or against a friend locally. The hard mode uses optimal strategy and never loses.
