Sprunki Music Mixer lets you create layered music by tapping characters, each with their own sound loop. No musical training needed. Here's how to get the most out of it.
Play Sprunki Music Mixer free and follow along.
How It Works
The game shows 8 character cards in a grid. Each character plays a different instrument loop: drums, bass, piano, sax, vocals, bells, brass, and effects. Tap a character to add them to the mix. Tap again to remove them. All loops stay synced to the beat automatically.
You're the DJ. Your job is picking which characters play together and when.
Getting Started: Your First Mix
Start with the basics. Tap the drum character first. You'll hear a kick and snare pattern. This is your foundation. Every good mix starts with a beat.
Next, add the bass. The low end fills out the sound and gives it groove. Drums plus bass already sounds like music.
Now try adding piano or bells on top. These add melody and harmony. Notice how everything stays in sync automatically.
Tips for Better Mixes
Start Sparse, Build Up
Don't turn on all 8 characters at once. Start with 1 or 2, let them groove for a few bars, then add another. Building up gradually sounds more musical than everything hitting at once.
Create Contrast
The magic is in what you leave out. If you have drums, bass, piano, and sax all playing, try removing the drums for a few beats. The drop when you add them back hits harder.
Use the BPM Slider
The tempo slider changes the speed of all loops at once. Try these:
- 80-90 BPM: Chill, lo-fi vibe
- 100-110 BPM: Hip hop groove
- 120 BPM: Standard pop/dance tempo (default)
- 140-160 BPM: Energetic, drum and bass feel
Slower tempos make the bass heavier. Faster tempos make the drums more driving.
Combine Unexpected Characters
Some combinations sound surprisingly good:
- Bells + Bass (no drums): ambient, ethereal
- Drums + Brass + FX: cinematic, intense
- Vocals + Piano + Bells: gentle, atmospheric
- All 8 together: full band energy
The "Drop" Technique
Turn on drums, bass, and one melody instrument. Let it play for a bit. Then quickly turn off everything except drums for 2 bars. Then turn everything back on at once. Congratulations, you just created a drop.
What Makes Each Character Sound Like
| Character | Sound | Role |
|---|---|---|
| Drum | Kick and snare pattern | Rhythm foundation |
| Bass | Low synth bass line | Groove and low end |
| Keys | Piano chord stabs | Harmony |
| Sax | Melodic lead line | Main melody |
| Vocals | Voice-like "la" pattern | Texture |
| Bells | High sparkle notes | Ear candy |
| Brass | Horn stabs | Accents |
| FX | Sweeps and risers | Transitions |
How the Sound Works
All sounds are generated in real time using the Web Audio API in your browser. No audio files are downloaded. The game creates oscillators, noise, and filters to produce each instrument sound. This is the same technology used in professional browser-based music tools.
Challenge Ideas
Once you're comfortable with basic mixing, try these challenges:
- Minimalist mix: Make something that sounds good with only 2 characters
- Full band: Get all 8 playing and make it not sound cluttered
- Genre switch: Change only the BPM and see how the same mix transforms
- Live performance: Add and remove characters in real time to create a mini song with build-ups and drops
About Sprunki and Incredibox
Sprunki Music Mixer is inspired by Incredibox, the French music creation app, and its popular fan mod Sprunki.
