How to Play Retro Bowl

Throwing the ball:

• Click or tap anywhere to snap the ball and start a play
• Your receivers sprint downfield running their routes
• Tap or click on a highlighted receiver to throw them the ball
• After the catch, the receiver runs automatically — tap the left or right side of the field to juke past oncoming defenders

Kicking:

• On 4th down inside field goal range, you can choose to kick for 3 points instead of going for the first down
• A successful kick attempt ends the drive with points on the board

Downs and scoring:

• 4 downs to gain 10 yards for a first down
• Incomplete passes and interceptions cost you a down
• Reach the end zone for a touchdown (6 points + extra point attempt)
• 4th down inside 40 yards: kick or go for it

Season Mode

Retro Bowl's core loop is the 8-game regular season. Win 5 or more games to qualify for the playoffs. Lose too many and you miss the postseason entirely.

The game escalates naturally — early opponents are forgiving, but by mid-season defenses will adapt and start jumping your routes. Varying your targets and reading coverage becomes increasingly important.

Playoff format: Win-or-go-home bracket. Reach and win the Retro Bowl championship game to complete your season. Then do it again next year with a tougher team.

Roster Management

Between games you manage your team's front office. Here's what matters:

Star ratings: Each player has a 1-5 star rating that affects their speed, catching, and reliability. A 5-star receiver makes difficult catches; a 1-star drops easy ones.

Salary cap: Players cost credits to keep on the roster. Cut underperformers to free up salary for better signings.

Drafting: At the end of each game you can sign a free agent or draft a new player. Always prioritize 3+ star players over cheaper low-rated ones — the salary difference rarely matters as much as the stat gap.

Morale: Players have morale ratings. Low morale leads to worse performance. Check before games and adjust your lineup if someone is unhappy.

Winning Strategy

1. Don't force throws into coverage. If every receiver has a defender nearby, take the checkdown or throw out of bounds. An incompletion is better than an interception that kills a drive.

2. Use jukes early in a run. The juke mechanic (tapping left or right after a catch) breaks defenders when activated at the right moment. Tap early — once you're already wrapped up, it's too late.

3. Build through the draft. Your team gets better season over season if you keep drafting high-star players. Early seasons are about surviving with what you have; later seasons are about fielding a stacked roster.

4. Kick field goals in scoring position. If you're inside the 35-yard line on 4th down and the game is close, take the 3 points. Turnovers on downs swing momentum dramatically.

5. Target your best receiver. Find your highest-rated receiver early and target him repeatedly. A 5-star receiver against average cornerback coverage wins most one-on-one matchups.
