Parking Lot is a browser version of the classic Rush Hour sliding puzzle. You slide cars and trucks on a 6×6 grid to clear a path for the red car to reach the exit. There are 24 hand-crafted levels across five difficulty tiers, and the game tracks your best move count and best time for each level.

This guide covers the strategies that make the difference between brute-forcing every level and solving them cleanly.

How Parking Lot Works

The red car sits in the middle row (row 3) and needs to reach the exit on the right edge. Every other vehicle blocks the path in some way — either directly, or by blocking a vehicle that blocks the red car.

Rules:

• Horizontal vehicles slide left and right only
• Vertical vehicles slide up and down only
• You cannot push vehicles through each other
• There's no time pressure — the clock runs but there's no fail state
• The game saves your best move count so you can replay and beat your record

The Core Strategy: Work Backward

The most important insight for Rush Hour puzzles: start from the exit, not the red car.

Ask yourself three questions in order:

1. What's directly blocking the red car? (Usually one vehicle in its row)
2. What's blocking that vehicle from moving? (What do you need to clear first?)
3. What's blocking those vehicles? (Keep drilling back until you find something that can move freely)

Once you trace the full chain, you solve it in reverse — move the deepest blocker first, then work your way back toward the red car.

5 Tips That Apply to Every Level

1. Don't touch the red car until the path is clear

This sounds obvious but most beginners try to push the red car as soon as there's partial room. Moving the red car prematurely often creates new blockages. Leave it in place until you've cleared all the obstacles in row 3.

2. Find the "free movers" first

On every board, some vehicles have open space to slide without needing anything else to move. These are your starting moves. Identify the vehicles that can slide immediately and figure out which direction helps (vs which direction makes things worse).

3. Count spaces, not just direction

Before moving a vehicle, count how many cells it can travel. A truck (length 3) that can only move one space may not be enough to clear a path — you might need to create more space first.

4. Vertical vehicles in row 3 are usually your first priority

Any vertical vehicle crossing row 3 (the red car's row) blocks the path. These vertical blockers can only be moved up or down. If they have space to slide in either direction, that's often your first move.

5. Reset early, not late

The game has a reset button. On medium and hard levels, it's common to back yourself into a corner after 10+ moves. If you notice the board is worse than when you started, reset. The goal is best move count — every unnecessary move hurts your score.

Reading Expert Levels

On expert levels (21–24), the entire board is packed. The standard backward-planning approach still works, but you'll often find chains of 4–5 vehicles where each one is blocked by the next.

A useful technique for dense boards: look for vertical vehicles near columns 4–5 (close to the exit). These are usually the last blocker in the chain — and they often have one free space to slide. Finding this "exit unlock" move first can reveal the rest of the solution.

Improving Your Best Move Count

After solving a level, replay it to cut down your move count. Most levels can be solved in fewer moves than your first attempt. The game saves your personal best for each level.

Beginner levels can often be solved in the minimum theoretically possible (3–5 moves). On expert levels, beating your first-run move count by even 30% is a meaningful improvement.
