  • "3+" in two cells: only 1+2

Subtraction cages:

  • "1-" in two cells: (2,1), (3,2), (4,3), (5,4), (6,5)
  • "5-" in two cells: only (6,1)

6. Cross-Cage Constraints

When two cages share a row or column, their combinations constrain each other. If one cage in a row must contain a 3, and another cage in the same row also must contain a 3, you know both cages can't have their 3 in the same row. Use this to eliminate possibilities.

7. Parity Reasoning

For subtraction cages, the two numbers must have the right parity relationship. A "1-" cage needs two numbers that differ by 1, so one must be odd and one must be even. This can help when combined with row/column constraints.

Advanced Strategies

8. Naked Pairs and Triples

If two cells in a row can only contain the same two numbers (say 2 and 5), then those numbers are locked in those cells. No other cell in that row can be 2 or 5. This powerful technique eliminates candidates across the entire row.

9. Hidden Singles

If a number can only go in one cell within a row (after eliminating impossibilities from cage analysis), that cell must contain that number, even if the cell has other candidates.

10. The "What If" Technique

When stuck, pick a cell with two candidates and temporarily assume one is correct. Follow the logic forward. If you reach a contradiction (same number in a row, impossible cage value), the other candidate must be correct.

Use this as a last resort since it's essentially trial and error. But it works when logical techniques stall.

11. Division Cage Tricks

Division cages are heavily constrained:

  • "2/" in two cells: (2,1), (4,2), (6,3) on a 6x6
  • "3/" in two cells: (3,1), (6,2) on a 6x6

The limited combinations make division cages almost as informative as single-cell cages.

Forgetting the no-repeat rule: Every row and column must have unique digits. It's easy to focus on cage math and forget this fundamental constraint.

Not considering all combinations: When a cage has multiple valid combinations, write them all down. Missing one combination means missing potential solutions.
