Strategy Tips for Clearing the Board

Work from the top down. Tiles on upper layers block multiple tiles beneath them. Removing high tiles first opens up more options below.

Prioritize tiles that free other tiles. Before matching a pair, look at what each removal will expose. Always pick the match that opens up more of the board.

Keep your options balanced. Try not to clear one side of the board while leaving the other side stacked. A balanced board gives you more available matches throughout the game.

Scan for triples before matching. If you see three identical tiles available, think carefully about which two to match. The wrong choice might leave the fourth tile of that type permanently blocked.

Watch the edges. Long rows of tiles along the edges can only be removed from the ends inward. If matching tiles are both trapped in the middle of the same row, you need to work the ends first.

Traditional Mahjong is a four-player game that originated in China during the Qing dynasty. The solitaire version we know today was created by Brodie Lockard in 1981 on a PLATO computer system. It became massively popular when it was included with early versions of Windows as "Taipei."
