Contexto Game Free Online | How to Play Semantic Word

By PlayBrain Teamยทยท4 min read

Play Contexto is one of the most unusual word games around. Unlike Wordle, there are no letter hints, no green squares, no yellow tiles. Your only feedback is a number: how semantically close your guess is to the secret word.

What Is Contexto?

Contexto was created by Carlos Merenda and uses word vector embeddings to measure how "close" two words are in meaning. When you guess a word, the game shows you its rank โ€” a number between 1 and 999.

  • Rank 1: That's the secret word. You win.
  • Rank 2โ€“10: Extremely close. Synonyms or very related words.
  • Rank 100โ€“300: You're in the right neighborhood โ€” same topic, broadly related.
  • Rank 500+: Distant. Wrong category or concept entirely.

There's no daily limit. You get unlimited guesses. The challenge is figuring out the secret word using only semantic proximity.

How the Ranking Works

The ranking is based on word embeddings โ€” a technique from natural language processing. Words that appear in similar contexts in text end up "close" to each other mathematically. So if the secret word is OCEAN:

  • BEACH might rank around 15 (very close in meaning)
  • WATER might rank around 40 (related concept)
  • SWIM might rank around 80 (associated activity)
  • FOOTBALL might rank around 600 (completely different)

The tricky part: the ranking isn't always intuitive. TIDE might rank higher than WATER even though TIDE feels more specific. That's because the embedding reflects actual usage patterns in text, not logical proximity.

Strategy: How to Get Better at Contexto

Start With Broad Categories

Don't start with random words. Open with category words to identify the domain:

  • Try broad nouns: ANIMAL, FOOD, SPORT, MUSIC, TOOL, NATURE, BODY
  • If ANIMAL ranks 250, you're in the right universe โ€” try specific animals
  • If ANIMAL ranks 800, the word is probably not a living thing

Use Your Rank Changes as Direction Signals

This is the core skill. When you go from rank 400 to rank 150 with two related guesses, you found a semantic direction. Keep moving that way.

  • HOUSE (rank 380) โ†’ HOME (rank 200) โ†’ ROOM (rank 120) โ†’ BEDROOM (rank 45) โ†’ BED (rank 12)

Think About Word Associations, Not Definitions

The model doesn't care about dictionary definitions. It cares about what words appear near each other in text. HOSPITAL and DOCTOR are semantically close because they co-occur constantly. HOSPITAL and SICK are also close. HOSPITAL and APPLE are not.

Watch for Traps

  • Plurals and verb forms count as different words: CATS and CAT have different ranks
  • Compound words can be tricky: FIRE vs FIREPLACE vs CAMPFIRE
  • Abstract concepts (FREEDOM, LOVE, TRUTH) often have confusing semantic neighborhoods

How Many Guesses Does It Take?

The global average for Contexto is around 30โ€“40 guesses. Expert players can often solve it in under 20. New players sometimes need 100+. The game tracks your total guesses for each puzzle.

If you're truly stuck, Contexto does offer hints โ€” it will reveal one of the top 10 words. Use hints sparingly since they reduce your score.

Related Word Games to Try

After Contexto, these games offer a similar "figure it out through feedback" challenge:

  • Word Guess โ€” Classic 5-letter Wordle with letter position hints. Easier to start with.
  • Dordle โ€” Solve two Wordle boards at once. Good step up from Wordle.
  • Spelling Bee โ€” Make as many words as possible from 7 letters. Different skill, same love of words.
  • Word Strands โ€” Find hidden words on a grid. Visual word search meets Wordle.
  • Absurdle โ€” The adversarial Wordle where the secret word keeps changing to avoid your guesses.

Frequently Asked Questions about Contexto Game Free Online | How to Play Semantic Word

How does Contexto work?
Contexto is a daily word-guessing game where you guess words and get ranked by semantic similarity to the secret word โ€” not letter matches. Word #1 is the closest semantically, word #500 is the furthest. An AI language model calculates similarity based on how words are used together in text. You have unlimited guesses and no daily time limit.
What's a good Contexto strategy?
Start with broad category words (animal, color, action, food) to identify the general domain. When you get a word ranked under 100, switch to specific synonyms and closely related concepts. Use the ranked list as a semantic map โ€” words ranked 50-100 tell you the neighborhood, words 1-20 tell you the exact address. Avoid letter-pattern thinking; think meaning and context instead.
Is Contexto like Semantle?
Yes โ€” Contexto is very similar to Semantle. Both use word embedding models to rank guesses by semantic similarity. Semantle uses word2vec embeddings; Contexto uses a different model with a numbered ranking to 500 instead of showing the semantic similarity score directly. Contexto's interface is more user-friendly for beginners.
