What Is a Binary Puzzle?

A binary puzzle is a grid (typically 6x6, 8x8, 10x10, or 12x12) that you fill with 0s and 1s. You start with some cells pre-filled, and your job is to complete the grid following three rules.

The Three Rules

Rule 1: No More Than Two Consecutive

You cannot have three or more of the same digit in a row or column. So `0 0 0` or `1 1 1` is not allowed, but `0 0 1` or `1 0 0` is fine.

Rule 2: Equal Count

Each row and each column must have the same number of 0s and 1s. In a 6x6 grid, that means three 0s and three 1s per row and per column. In a 10x10 grid, five of each.

Rule 3: Unique Rows and Columns

No two rows can be identical, and no two columns can be identical. Every row must be unique and every column must be unique.

How to Solve Binary Puzzles

Strategy 1: Avoid Three in a Row

This is your most basic tool. If you see two consecutive 0s, the cells on either side must be 1s (and vice versa). Scan every row and column for pairs.

For example: `_ 0 0 _` means the blanks must both be `1`, giving `1 0 0 1`.

Strategy 2: Complete the Count

If a row already has its maximum number of one digit, all remaining cells must be the other digit. In a 6x6 grid, once a row has three 1s, every empty cell in that row must be 0.

Strategy 3: Prevent Triples

Sometimes a cell is not next to a pair, but filling it with a certain digit would create a triple further along. Look one step ahead. If placing a 0 in a cell would force a triple somewhere in the same row or column, it must be a 1.

Strategy 4: The Sandwich

If two identical digits have exactly one gap between them (`0 _ 0`), the gap must be the other digit. Otherwise you would eventually create a triple.

Strategy 5: Uniqueness

In harder puzzles, you will reach a point where two rows are almost identical with just one or two cells differing. Use Rule 3 to figure out which arrangement is valid.

Strategy 6: Elimination

When you are stuck, pick a cell and try both values. One of them will usually violate a rule within a few logical steps, proving the other value is correct.

Tips for Faster Solving

Start with obvious cells. Scan the entire grid for pairs first. Every pair gives you guaranteed fills on adjacent cells.

Work rows and columns simultaneously. A fill in one row often creates a pair in a column, which gives you more fills. Keep going back and forth.

Track your counts. Mentally note how many 0s and 1s each row and column has. When one count reaches the maximum, the rest is automatic.

Use pencil marks. On harder puzzles, note both possibilities in uncertain cells. When one is eliminated, the other is confirmed.
